Process Of Individual Decoding Of Media Text: Study Overview Of The Media Effects Theories Supplemented By A Research Resulting From Hall’s Encoding and Decoding Concept and Morley’s Nationwide Study

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Proces individuálního dekódování medálního textu“ se zaměřuje na studium mediálních účinků s důrazem na výzkum publika. Klíčový je zde teoretický koncept zakódování a dekódování Stuarta Halla a studie Nationwide Davida Morleyho. Celkový chronologický přehled z oblasti teorie a výzkumu mediálních účinků přináším v teoretické části. Ve druhé praktické části se zaměřuji na populaci z našeho současného socio-kulturního prostředí, abychom měli srovnání vzhledem ke světovým výzkumům. Vycházím ze zmíněného Hallova konceptu a Morleyho studie, kde pomocí individuálního dotazování zkoumám proces individuálního dekódování. Prostředkem mi jsou tři vybrané ukázky z filmu Fahrenheit 9/11 od Michaela Moorea, jež respondenti interpretují okamžitě po jejich zhlédnutí.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis “Process of Individual Decoding of Media Text” deals with studies of media effects emphasizing audience research. The key point here is the theoretical concept of encoding and decoding of Stuart Hall and David Morley´s Nationwide study. Theoretical part brings overall chronological survey of theories and research of media effects. In the second – empirical part of my work I am focusing on population from our contemporary socio-cultural environment in order to have comparison with explorations around the world. I assume from the Hall’s concept and Morley’s study mentioned above, which I investigate the process of individual decoding by using individual questioning. As a means I have used three selected scenes from the film Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore that respondents interpret immediately after watching it.
