Fourth age and its age specification at the case of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá posledním obdobím života člověka – čtvrtým věkem. První část práce obsahuje rešerši literatury zabývající se čtvrtým věkem, především se orientuje na různá pojetí čtvrtého věku a na rozmanité teoretické přístupy k němu. Po teoretické části práce následuje část praktická, která má za cíl určení přibližného kalendářního věku, ve kterém dochází k přechodu z takzvaného třetího věku do věku čtvrtého u osob v České republice. Z dostupných dat Českého statistického úřadu byly vypočteny údaje, které ukazují, že hranice čtvrtého věku v České republice postupně rostla a v současnosti se pohybuje okolo 80 let. Lze tedy konstatovat, že lidé v České republice vstupují do čtvrtého věku přibližně v době, kdy dosahují kalendářního věku 80 let. Tato hranice se ale postupně vyvíjela a na základě tohoto vývoje lze předpokládat její další zvyšování i v budoucnosti. Pokud jde o rozdíly mezi muži a ženami, práce nepotvrdila souvislost pohlaví s kalendářním věkem, ve kterém začíná čtvrtý věk. Muži i ženy vstupují do tohoto období přibližně ve stejném věku, což se může ale změnit s budoucím růstem hranice čtvrtého věku výrazněji nad 80 let kalendářního věku, kde se pravděpodobně stanou rozdíly mezi muži a ženami výraznějšími.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the last period of human life – the fourth age. The first part of the thesis contains background research of literature dealing with the fourth age, it is especially aimed at various concepts of the fourth age and at diverse theoretical approaches to it. The theoretical part is followed by a practical part, which is aiming at assignment of an approximate calendar age, when the transition from the third age to the fourth age occurs for people in the Czech Republic. The results in this thesis are based on the accessible data of Czech Statistical Office. These results show that the line between the third and the fourth age in the Czech Republic has been increasing and presently it is close to 80 years. Accordingly it can be said that people in the Czech Republic enter the fourth age when they are 80 years old. The line between the third and the fourth age show the gradual increase and on the basis of this increase we can assume that the line will be increasing in the future as well. Differences between men and women are not confirmed by this thesis. Men and women enter the fourth age approximately in the same calendar age. However, this can be changed by the future development of the line of the fourth age. The differences between sexes can be more visible, as the line rise to over 80 years.
