Study of the soil environment to degradation of leather

Abstract:

Archeologická useň je obklopena zeminou (v půdním prostředí) a je tak významně ovlivněna komplexním – anorganickým, organickým i biologickým – složením půdy, které má primární vliv na rozklad materiálů tvořících useň. Kromě degradace složek usně (činiva, tuky, kolagenní substrát) lze očekávat i její obohacení především o anorganické půdní složky (ionty Si, Al, Ca, Mg, Fe apod.), které se pravděpodobně na useň sorbují. Všechny tyto faktory pak ovlivňují např. barevnost, mechanické vlastnosti či obsah různých složek usně (tuky, činiva, apod.). Cílem práce bylo zjistit mechanismy, průběh a rychlost půdní (bio)degradace usně. K získání co nejpřesnějších znalostí o (bio)degradaci usně v půdním prostředí byly nejprve připraveny modelové vzorky. Nově vyčiněné usně proto byly zakopány po dobu jednoho a dvou let do půdního substrátu v přirozeném venkovním prostředí, čímž bylo zajištěno střídání ročních období a přirozené půdní procesy. Takto připravené modelové vzorky usní, stejně jako příslušné vzorky usní nových a vzorky reálných archeologických usní byly podrobeny řadě analýz. Získané výsledky byly mezi sebou por ovnány a vyhodnocovány. Vzájemným porovnáním výsledků jsme byli schopni určit, které složky usně degradují rychleji či pomaleji a jak degradace ovlivňuje stav a vlastnosti usní. Sledovali jsme jak vizuální změny, tak změny strukturní a obsahové. V práci byly využity jak metody destruktivní, tak metody semi- a nedestruktivní. Z destruktivních metod, které nachází uplatnění především v průmyslovém odvětví k hodnocení kvality produktu, jsme využili zkoušení pevnosti a prodloužení, stanovení těkavých látek, stanovení tukových (extrahovatelných) látek, stanovení vodou extrahovatelných látek, stanovení obsahu dusíku, stanovení celkového sulfátového popela nebo měření pH vodného výluhu usní. Z nedestruktivních a semidestruktivních metod, nacházejících využití především v konzervátorské praxi, jsme využili ATR-FTIR spektroskopii, SEM-EDX, kolorimetrické měření, určení soudržnosti vláken či stanovení hydrotermální stability pomocí MHT. Pozornost byla věnována i detekci použitých činiv, a to pomocí spalovacích zkoušet, kapkovacích testů a FTIR spektroskopie. Některé z použitých metod se běžně používají ke zhodnocení stupně degradace historických kolagenních materiálů. Jedním z cílů práce bylo zjistit využitelnost těchto již osvědčených postupů k určení stupně degradace archeologických usní. V neposlední řadě se práce zaměřila i na možnosti zhodnocení stupně degradace s využitím metod používaných k hodnocení.

Abstract:

Archaeological leather is surrounded with soil in the ground environment and thus it is influenced by complex inorganic, organic and biological soil composition, which has a significant impact on the decay of the leather substrate. Besides the degradation of individual leather components (e.g. tannins, lipids, collagen substrate), it is assumed that leather can be enriched by inorganic components of the soil (e.g. Si, Al, Ca, Mg, Fe). All these facts influence colour, mechanical properties or content of individual components in the leather. The main goal of the thesis was to investigate the mechanisms, progress and (bio)degradation rate of the leather in the soil environment. First of all, model samples were prepared to obtain detailed knowledge of (bio)degradation of the leather in the soil environment. Because of that, newly tanned leathers were buried into the soil for the period of one and two years. Ageing was carried out in outdoor environment to ensure the climatic changes and natural soil processes for tested samples. Buried model samples, as well as new reference samples and samples from genuine archaeological leathers, were analysed using a wide range of analytical methods. Obtained results were then compared and assessed together. The comparison of the results helped us to define which leather components are decayed faster or slower or how the degradation influences the state of the leather and its properties. We explored visual changes of the leather together with the changes of its structure, content and composition. The destructive, semi-destructive and non-destructive methods were employed during the study. From a variety of destructive methods, which are used for the evaluation of the quality of leather products in industry, we relied especially on determination of tensile strength and elongation, volatile matter, extractible matter, water-soluble matter, content of nitrogen, content of sulphated ash and pH measurements. Non-destructive and semi-destructive methods are applied by the conservators more often. We employed techniques of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, SEM-EDX analysis, colorimetric measurement, determination of fibre coherence or determination of shrinkage temperature by MHT method. We also focused on the possibility to identify particular tannins and for this reason, additional methods, such as burning test and spot tests, were applied. Some of the methods are used regularly to assess the degradation level of historical collagen materials (e.g. parchments, bookbinding, upholstery, etc.). One of the goals of the thesis was to assess if these methods can be used for the testing of degradation level of archaeological leathers as well.
