False Friends in Teaching German at a Czech Lower Secondary School

Abstract:

This thesis explores English transfer and false friends in the context of German language teaching in Czech lower secondary education. It aims to investigate the perspectives of three German language teachers towards English false friends in qualitative interviews. The thesis also aims to explore the views, attitudes and knowledge of 37 pupils using a questionnaire survey to enable comparison with their teachers' perspectives. The interviews with the teachers revealed that although they do not do any exercises with their pupils specifically targeting false friends, they try to draw pupils' attention to the different meanings of similar-looking words. However, the knowledge-based question in the questionnaire survey revealed that the success rate of the pupils in detecting common English false friends in German sentences was only 18 %. It was also found that the teachers who had some knowledge of English perceived a negative transfer from the English language, which was mainly manifested in the areas of pronunciation and vocabulary memorisation. These teachers tried to highlight the positive transfer and thus used their pupils' English knowledge as an advantage and aid while learning German. These findings point to the usefulness of English knowledge for German language teachers. The majority of the participating pupils also perceived negative transfer from English. The questionnaire survey further revealed that the pupils consider false friends as an important topic, which a significant number of them would like to deal with more in their German language classes. Since very few studies have pursued false friends in German language teaching in Czech lower-secondary schools, this thesis seeks to broaden the knowledge on the subject.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje anglickému transferu a falešným přátelům v kontextu výuky německého jazyka v českém nižším sekundárním vzdělávání. Práce si klade za cíl pomocí kvalitativních rozhovorů prozkoumat postoje tří učitelek německého jazyka vůči anglickým falešným přátelům a jejich zkušenosti z výuky. Práce si dále klade za cíl pomocí dotazníkového šetření prozkoumat názory, postoje a znalosti 37 žáků a umožnit tak porovnání s perspektivou jejich vyučujících. Rozhovory s učitelkami odhalily, že byť se svými žáky nedělají žádná cvičení specificky zaměřená na falešné přátele, snaží se na rozdílné významy podobně vypadajících slov žáky upozorňovat. Nicméně, znalostní otázka v dotazníkovém šetření ukázala, že úspěšnost žáků v odhalování běžných anglických falešných přátel v německých větách byla pouze 18 %. Dále bylo zjištěno, že učitelky, které disponovaly znalostmi angličtiny, vnímaly negativní transfer z anglického jazyka, který se projevoval především v oblasti výslovnosti a memorování slovní zásoby. Tyto učitelky se snažily vyzdvihovat pozitivní transfer a využívat tak anglické znalosti svých žáků jako výhodu a pomůcku při učení se německému jazyku. Tato zjištění poukazují na přínosnost anglických znalostí u učitelů německého jazyka. Většina zúčastněných žáků však vnímala spíše negativní transfer z angličtiny. Z dotazníkového šetření dále vyplynulo, že žáci považují falešné přátelé za důležité téma, kterému by se podstatná část z nich ráda věnovala v hodinách německého jazyka více. Jelikož se anglickými falešnými přáteli ve výuce německého jazyka na českých základních školách zabývá velmi malé množství studií, snaží se tato diplomová práce rozšířit znalosti o dané problematice.
