Journey within the non-belonging. Discursive analysis of the representation of Roma minority in Slovak post-revolutionary fictional cinema

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis is focused on the representation of Roma minority in Slovak post-revolutionary cinema using the qualitative method of discursive analysis. The goal is to examine the regime of representation in the sample of the audiovisual works with an emphasis on an act of traveling as a carrier of the attributes of exclusion or non-belonging. In the theoretical part, the historical context of Roma minority in the area of the Slovak republic and their presence in both world and Slovak cinema is being introduced as well as genre conventions of a generally defined road movie. Theory of representation is described with a connection to the "Othering" of marginalized groups along with strategies to challenge reductive representational practices and relation of representation to realism. The practical part of this thesis aims to explore the construction of the discourse in five films Zlatý hlas (2004), Až do mesta Aš (2012), Môj pes Killer (2013), Koza (2015) and Loli paradička (2019). In parts dedicated to poverty, cultural identity on a local and national level, and film style, the discursive construction of non-belonging and the presence of subversive representational strategies is being shown in the frame of the motif of a journey.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá reprezentáciou rómskej menšiny v slovenskej porevolučnej kinematografii pomocou kvalitatívnej metódy diskurzívnej analýzy. Cieľom je preskúmať režim reprezentácie na vzorke audiovizuálnych diel s dôrazom na cestovanie ako nositeľa atribútov vylúčenia. V teoretickej časti je predstavený historický kontext Rómov na Slovenskom území a ich pôsobenie v svetovej aj slovenskej kinematografii a žánrové konvencie obšírne definovaného road movie. Súčasne je opísaná teória reprezentácie vo vzťahu k scudzovaniu marginalizovaných skupín, protichodné stratégie reduktívnych reprezentačných praktík a spätosť realizmu s reprezentáciou. V praktickej časti práce prebieha analýza konštrukcie diskurzu na piatich filmoch Zlatý hlas (2004), Až do mesta aš (2012), Môj pes Killer (2013), Koza (2015) a Loli paradička (2019). V častiach venujúcich sa chudobe, kultúrnej identite na lokálnej aj národnej úrovni a filmovému štýlu, sa preukazuje diskurzívna konštrukcia vylúčenia v rámci motívu cesty ako aj prítomnosť podvratných taktík reprezentácie.
