The Theme of Antisemitism in Dara Horn's The World to Come

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to focus on anti-semitism in Dara Horn´s novel The World to Come, to point to various literary devices which help her to create a parallel between the story itself and the suffering of Eastern Jews, especially under the Stalin´s regime. The work defines the term anti-semitism, it introduces the themes, main characters, different settings and time-lines, as well as it points out the factual events and people that gave the book its framework. Significant part of the thesis is devoted to the interpretation of symbolic motives appearing throughout the novel and the question of the title´s meaning and the novel´s ending. Crucial issues have been discussed in an interview with the author herself.

Abstract:

Hlavním záměrem práce je poukázat na otázku antisemitismu v novele Dary Horn The World to Come, upozornit na prostředky, které autorce slouží k vytvoření paralely mezi příběhem samotným a utrpením východních Židů, především v době Stalinistického režimu. Práce definuje termín antisemitismus, představuje hlavní postavy, dějiště, časové linie příběhu a upozorňuje na skutečné události a postavy, jež vytvořily románový rámec. Výrazná část práce se věnuje interpretaci symbolů, otázce významu samotného názvu románu a výkladu jeho konce. Klíčové otázky byly zkonzultovány se samotnou autorkou románu.
