Comparison of the image of Tibetan Buddhism as presented in the reports of Estavao Cacella and Ippolito Desideri

Abstract:

This bechelor thesis will be focused on content analysis and analogical comparison of reports of the two of the Jesuit missionaries, Estêvão Cacella and Ippolito Desideri, who came across a Tibetan Buddhism while on their missionary travels. This thesis will be based on the English and Czech translations of both reports’editions. Starting point for thesis will be the older and also shorter message of Estêvão Cacella. In this message, I will determine six motives relevant to the topics of the mission, Christianity and Tibetan Buddhism, which I will analyse and subsequently localize and compare with the way Desideri works with these six motives. The objective of this work is to investigate the depth of knowledge about Tibetan Buddhism of both of the mentioned authors and also to explore the process of gaining this particular knowledge – to what extend their reports are based on their own observations and research, and to what extend on information gathered from other sources. I will also investigate how they applied this knowledge in their missionary work. I will try to determine the manner in which the Tibetan Buddhism is presented in the Cacella’s message, and, if there is any significant change or shift in the Desideri’s message according to the key topics processed by Cacella. As a part of the thesis I will also elucidate the purpose, method and the history of missionary activity of the Jesuit order in Asia, specifically in Bhutan and Tibet.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa bude venovať obsahovej analýze a analogickej komparácii správ dvoch jezuitských misionárov, Estêvãa Cacellu a Ippolita Desideriho, ktorí prišli v priebehu svojich ciest v rámci misionárskej činnosti do kontaktu s tibetským buddhizmom. Práca bude vychádzať z anglického a českého prekladu edícií oboch správ. Východiskom bude staršia a kratšia správa Estêvãa Cacellu. V nej určím šesť motívov súvisiacich s témou misie, kresťanstva a tibetského buddhizmu. Tieto motívy lokalizujem a analyzujem aj v druhej správe od Ippolita Desideriho a následne porovnám, akým spôsobom s nimi autori pracujú. Cieľom tejto práce je preskúmať mieru vedomostí o tibetskom buddhizme u oboch autorov a spôsob získavania týchto vedomostí – do akej miery zakladali svoje správy na vlastnom pozorovaní a výskume a do akej miery sa opierajú o informácie získané z iných zdrojov; či to, akým spôsobom tieto informácie využívajú pri svojej misionárskej činnosti. Pokúsim sa určiť, akým spôsobom je predstavený tibetský buddhizmus v správe Cacellovej a či dochádza k výraznej zmene či posune v správe Desideriho s ohľadom na kľúčové témy spracované Cacellom. V rámci práce priblížim i význam, spôsob a históriu misionárskej činnosti jezuitského rádu v Ázii, konkrétne v Bhutáne a v Tibete.
