Totalitarianism in Czechoslovakia and labor camps in Příbram

Abstract:

Tématem předkládané diplomové práce je fenomén totalitarismu a jeho projevy v Československu především v 50. letech 20. století. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí: na teoretickou, historickou a praktickou část. Teoretická část práce se zabývá výkladem fenoménu totalitarismu, odlišnými přístupy a spory ohledně samotného pojmu, teorií totalitarismu Hannah Arendtové, prací Carla Joachima Friedricha a Zbigniewa Brzezinského a v neposlední řadě nastiňuje projevy totalitarismu u moci. Oproti tomu historická část mapuje politickou situaci v Československu po druhé světové válce. Analyzuje jednotlivé části Košického vládního programu, politický vývoj po jeho přijetí, teror 50. let a zákonná opatření vydaná na podzim roku 1948. Na zmiňovaná zákonná opatření navazuje praktická část diplomové práce. Ta se pokouší přiblížit využití nesvobodných pracovních sil při těžbě uranové rudy. Přínos práce spočívá v propojení teoretických poznatků o totalitarismu a jeho teroru s jedním praktickým případem, jímž byl tábor Vojna na Příbramsku.

Abstract:

The theme of this diploma thesis is the phenomenon of totalitarianism and its manifestations in Czechoslovakia especially in the 1950s. This work is divided into three parts: the theoretical, historical and practical part. The theoretical part of this thesis is focused on interpretation of the phenomenon of totalitarianism, different approaches and disputes about the notion itself, the theory of totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt, the work of Carl Joachim Friedrich and Zbigniew Brzezinsky, and last but not least, outlines the manifestations of totalitarianism in power. In contrast, the historical part maps the political situation in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War. The thesis analyzes individual parts of the Košice Government Program, the political development after its adoption and the terror of the 1950s and the legal measures issued in autumn 1948. On the mentioned legal measures follows the practical part of the thesis. This part tries to get closer about the use of non-free labour in the extraction of uranium ore. The benefit of the thesis lies in the interconnection of the theoretical knowledge about totalitarianism and its terror with one practical case, the Vojna camp in Příbram region.
