The Relationship between Age and Confrontation Naming Abilities in the elderly Czech Population

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vztahem mezi schopností pojmenování a věkem. Využívá k tomu data z české Národní normativní studie kognitivních determinant zdravého stárnutí (NANOK). Vztah věku a schopnosti pojmenování byl průřezově ověřován u velkého vzorku (N=540) kognitivně zdravých českých seniorů starších 60 let. Schopnost pojmenování byla měřena pomocí zkrácené verze Bostonského testu pojmenování (BNT-30). Kontrolovány byly i další demografické prediktory (pohlaví a úroveň vzdělání) a jejich moderující efekt. Práce zjistila mírný negativní vztah mezi věkem a výkony v testu pojmenování. Variabilita výkonů byla větší u starších věkových skupin. Základní longitudinální srovnání s využitím dat z retestu po třech letech (N=339) dále ukázalo, že vyšší výkony při prvním testování predikovaly menší změnu výkonů. Tato zjištění jsou interpretována v kontextu teorie kognitivní rezervy. Vedlejším cílem práce bylo ověření vybraných psychometrických vlastností české verze BNT-30. Test vykázal dobrou konstruktovou validitu, vysokou vnitřní konzistenci, smíšenou konvergentní/diskriminační validitu, nízkou obtížnost pro zdravou populaci a mírně větší obtížnost pro ženy než pro muže. V rámci práce jsou také představeny první české normy pro BNT-30 a diskutována doporučení pro další vývoj metody.

Abstract:

The current study focuses on the relationship between confrontation naming abilities and age. For this aim, data from the Czech National Normative Study of Cognitive Determinants of Healthy Aging (NANOK) were used. The relationship between age and naming abilities was assessed cross-sectionally using a large sample (N=540) of cognitively healthy Czech seniors aged 60 and older. Confrontation naming was measured using the shortened version of the Boston Naming Test (BNT-30). Other demographic predictors (sex and educational level) were con-trolled, along with their moderating effects. The study found a mild negative relationship between the age and naming performance. Older age groups manifested higher variability in performance. Furthermore, a basic longitudinal comparison using data from a retest after 3 years (N=339) showed that higher performance at the baseline predicted a smaller change in performance. These findings are interpreted in the context of cognitive reserve theory. A secondary goal of the current study was to evaluate selected psychometric characteristics of the Czech adaptation of BNT-30. The test manifested good construct validity, high internal consistency, mixed convergent/discriminant validity, a low difficulty for healthy population and a slightly higher difficulty for women than for men. First Czech norms for BNT-30 are also introduced and recommendations for further development of the method are discussed.
