The elements of the theater of the absurd in Pavel Kohout's plays

Abstract:

Tématem této práce jsou prvky absurdního divadla v dramatech jednoho z předních českých spisovatelů – Pavla Kohouta. Celá bakalářská práce je rozčleněna do čtyř kapitol. V kapitole první shrnuji teorii a historii žánru "absurdní drama," přičemž jsem vycházela především ze studie Podstata, tradice a smysl absurdního divadla (1966), která shrnuje základní poznatky o absurdním divadle, jejichž autorem je anglický divadelní teoretik Martin Esslin. Dále je v první kapitole věnován prostor dvěma významným představitelům žánru absurdní drama, kteří jsou rovněž považováni za jeho zakladatele: Samuelu Beckettovi a Eugène Ionescovi. Závěr kapitoly patří českým autorům absurdního dramatu, mimo jiné jeho hlavnímu představiteli u nás Václavu Havlovi. Druhá kapitola pojednává o životě a díle Pavla Kohouta. Snaží se čtenáři přiblížit okolnosti v jeho životě, které zásadním způsobem ovlivnily jeho spisovatelskou činnost. Ve třetí kapitole je již započat vlastní výzkum prvků absurdního dramatu ve vybraných autorových hrách. Konkrétně se jedná o hry Chudáček a August August, august. Výzkum pokračuje také ve čtvrté kapitole, jejímž námětem jsou aktovky ze života Ferdinanda Vaňka, tedy Atest, Marast a Safari.

Abstract:

The topic of this thesis is elements of the theater of the absurd in plays written by one of the most important Czech writer – Pavel Kohout. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is describing theory and history of the theater of the absurd and it´s based on essay Principle, tradition and purpose of the theater of the absurd (1966) that summarize basic findings about the theater of the absurd which author is English theater theorist Martin Esslin. Except theory and history the first chapter deals with two important personalities who are also founders of this genre: Samuel Beckett and Eugène Ionesco. The end of this chapter belongs to Czech authors of the theater of the absurd and among others to its major representative Václav Havel. In the second chapter is mentioned life and literary production of Pavel Kohout. The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate events which formed his literary working. The research of the elements related to the theater of the absurd from chosen author’s plays begins in the third chapter. Plays that were used in this research are Chudáček and August August, august. The research continues in the fourth chapter which subjects are plays about Ferdinand Vaněk´s life – Atest, Marast and Safari.
