Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Postcolonial issues in Monica Ali’s Brick Lane“ analyzuje debutový román britské autorky Moniky Ali jako dílo obsahující některé hlavní rysy postkolonialismu. Hlavními body, kterými se práce zabývá, jsou odlišná vnímání žen zemí Třetího světa, nacionalismus a feminismus. Všímá si historických událostí předcházejícím vzniku státu Bangladéš a vyzdvihuje v jejím díle problémy týkající se imigrantů z bývalých britských kolonií, kteří po vystěhování do země bývalého kolonizátora čelí odlišné kultuře a tradicím. Práce se zabývá odlišnostmi postojů imigrantů první vlny a jejich potomků. Dále vyhledává a srovnává charakteristické rysy ženských hrdinek románu a jejich vývoj. Soustředí se na srovnání mužské a ženské role v tradičně pojaté muslimské rodině a sleduje posun těchto rolí způsobený vlivem konzumní společnosti. V neposlední řadě reflektuje různorodé přijetí románu kritikou ve Velké Británii a v České republice.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis “Postcolonial issues in Monica Ali’s Brick Lane” analyzes debut novel of British author Monica Ali as work containing some main features of postcolonialism. The thesis deals with the different reflection of Third World Women, nationalism and feminism. It briefly covers the history of Bangladesh and describes the problems of immigrants from former British colonies, their conflicts with different culture or traditions. It compares first and second wave immigrants, and finds the main distinctions between them. Another topic covered in this thesis is the development of female characters of the novel. It focuses on the traditional male and female roles in a Muslim family and the shift caused by the influence of the secular society. It also touches the contradictory responses to the novel in Great Britain and in the Czech Republic.
