The influence of food supply of macroinvertebrates on the occurrence of waterbirds in fishponds

Abstract:

The food as an ecological factor is beside the breeding opportunities a very important factor determining the presence or absence of certain bird species in the ecosystem. The basic components of food for many species of water birds are diverse groups of aquatic macroinvertebrates. Aquatic invertebrates are most important during nesting and breeding period and for juveniles in the first days after hatching. In the Czech republic the fish ponds are the most important habitat for birds, therefore we have chosen 22 south Moravian fish ponds for our field study. There were three nature reserves (NR Šumický rybník, NR Františkův rybník a NR Písečný rybník), two special protection areas (SPA Úvalský rybník a SPA Vrbovecký rybník) and one pond is the part of national nature reserve (Prostřední rybník). The field trip was held within May and June 2013 and we did the basic measurements of physical and chemical characteristics of water, the zooplankton, the zoobenthos and the littoral invertebrates were sampled. Moreover we had been monitoring throughout the season the presence and the successful breeding of water birds with the invertebrate food demands. The most numerous species were the Eurasian coot (Fulica atra) and the great-crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus). The rarest species were the black-necked grebe (Podiceps nigricollis), the common teal (Anas crecca), the garganey (Anas querquedula) and the northern shoveller (Anas clypeata). The water macroinvertebrate assemblages created the main gradient at our study sites, the bird densities increased with abundance of zoobenthos, the bird species diversity increased with the abundance of littoral invertebrates. The strong correlation of bird densities was found with water bugs (Heteroptera) and mayflies (Ephemeroptera). Bird preference of ponds with large zooplankton individuals highlights the importance of the regulation of fish stocks. The results can serve, among others, to the evaluation and setting appropriate management particularly in pond reserves.

Abstract:

Potrava jako ekologický faktor je vedle hnízdních možností význačným činitelem podmiňujícím přítomnost či absenci konkrétních druhů ptáků v příslušném ekosystému. Základní složkou potravy pro mnohé vodní druhy ptáků jsou různé skupiny vodních bezobratlých. Nejdůležitější jsou vodní bezobratlí v době hnízdění a vyvádění mláďat. Na území ČR jsou nejvýznamnějším biotopem pro ptáky rybníky, proto jsme si pro náš výzkum vybrali 22 rybníků na jižní Moravě. Mezi vybranými lokalitami byli tři přírodní rezervace (PR Šumický rybník, PR Františkův rybník a PR Písečný rybník), dvě evropsky významné lokality (EVL Úvalský rybník a EVL Vrbovecký rybník) a jeden rybník, který je součástí národní přírodní rezervace (Prostřední rybník). Terénní výzkum proběhl v květnu a červnu roku 2013 a na každé lokalitě byli změřené základní fyzikálně-chemické parametre vody, odebrané byli vzorky zooplanktonu, zoobentosu a bezobratlých litorálních porostů. Kromě toho jsme během celé hnízdní sezony sledovali přítomnost a úspěšné hnízdění hladinových vodních ptáků, kteří hojně využívají živočišnou potravu. Nejpočetnějšími druhy byly lyska černá (Fulica atra) a potápka roháč (Podiceps cristatus). Naopak mezi vzácné druhy patřily potápka černokrká (Podiceps nigricollis), čírka obecná (Anas crecca), čírka modrá (Anas querquedula) a lžičák pestrý (Anas clypeata). Společenstva vodních bezobratlých tvořila hlavní ekologický gradient na vybraných lokalitách, přičemž hustota ptáků rostla především s abundancemi bentických živočichů, diverzita potom s abundancemi fytofilních bezobratlých. Z bezobratlých zařazených do vyšších taxonomických celků statisticky významně ve vztahu k početnostem ptáků korelovala především početnost ploštic (Heteroptera) a jepic (Ephemeroptera). Preference rybníků s velkými zástupci zooplanktonu poukazuje na důležitost regulace rybích obsádek. Zjištěné výsledky můžou posloužit mimo jiné k vyhodnocení a nastavení vhodného managementu především v rybničních rezervacích.
