Voices of the Marginalized: How West Coast Rap/Hip-Hop Emerged as a Political Force in the 1980s and 1990s

Abstract:

This thesis examines the emergence of rap and hip-hop as a voice for marginalized groups on the West Coast in the 1980s and 1990s. In particular, it examines the prevailing issues articulated by rap artists and extends its focus beyond the 1992 urban uprising event. The study also examines the lyrical compositions of three significant rap songs. It uses qualitative content analysis to place the music in the broader context of the socio-political environment of the time. The corpus of data includes selected songs from this period that reveal the connection between social tensions and the development of rap as a powerful medium for expressing the discontent of marginalized groups.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vznikem rapu/hip-hopu jako hlasu marginalizovaných skupin na západním pobřeží v 80. a 90. let 20. století. Zkoumá zejména převládající problémy artikulované rapovými umělci a rozšiřuje své zaměření i mimo událost městského povstání v roce 1992. Studie rovněž zkoumá textové kompozice tří významných hiphopových písní a pomocí kvalitativní obsahové analýzy zkoumá tuto hudbu v širším kontextu tehdejšího společensko-politického prostředí. Korpus dat obsahuje vybrané písně z tohoto období, které odhalují souvislost mezi společenským napětím a rozvojem rapu jako mocného média pro vyjádření nespokojenosti marginalizovaných skupin.
