Vector of information: Theoretical concept and its use to mitigate the negative impact of filter bubbles in spreading disinformation in the online environment

Anotace:

Dezinformace se v posledním desetiletí stala významnou hrozbou pro společnost, a to zejména díky moderním technologiím, které otevřely dříve nepředstavitelné možnosti pro nepřátelské informační operace. Tato situace je v lidské historii bezprecedentní a vede ke snadno manipulovatelné post-truth společnosti, kde fakta a vědecké znalosti nemají váhu. Přesto však v oblasti online dezinformací a informačních operací zatím neexistuje účinná obrana. Domníváme se, že aby byla taková obrana vytvořena, je třeba zavést inovativní a škálovatelná technologická opatření, která pomohou dopad informačních operací a efektu informačních bublin minimalizovat. S ohledem na výše uvedené předkládáme výzkumnou otázku, zda by mohlo existovat škálovatelné technické řešení schopné pomoci zmírnit negativní účinek dezinformace zlepšením stávající informační infrastruktury, a to neinvazivním způsobem tak, aby ve výsledku podpořilo kritický přístup v informačním chování běžných konzumentů. Pokud ano, jaké podmínky by měly být splněny, aby takové řešení mohlo skutečně vzniknout. V naší práci se zaměřujeme pouze na dezinformace šířené online, a to zejména v rámci platforem sociálních sítí. Dotýkáme se fenoménu informačních bublin, které hrají klíčovou roli při šíření dezinformací, a dále způsobu, jak protichůdné informační bubliny efektivně přemostit. Náš výzkum je teoretického charakteru. Předkládáme abstraktní tezi, založenou na algebraické teorii vektorového prostorou pro reprezentaci informací, kterou se snažíme podpořit obsahovou analýzou stávajícího interdisciplinárního výzkumu. Naším cílem je využít tuto teorii inovativním způsobem pro nový teoretický konstrukt s pracovním označením „vektor informace“. V rámci této teze se na informaci díváme jako na vektor, který má svůj počátek, směr a velikost, kterou lze změřit, a nejedná se tedy o pouhý bod v prostoru. Domníváme se, že pokud budeme schopni s informací pracovat jako s vektorem v daném vektorovém prostoru, budeme také moci snadno rozkrýt rodokmen této informace a její kontext včetně zesilovačů, což dané cílové skupině pomůže s adekvátní interpretací této informace. Tento přístup by nám otevřel prostor pro nové metody zpracování informací, které budou pracovat nezávisle na stávajících, na uživatele zaměřených, doručovacích algoritmech, a pomohl by nám tak překlenout negativní efekt informačních bublin. Teoretickou práci doplňuje koncepční návrh aplikačního rámce a ideový model page flow.

Abstract:

Disinformation has become a significant threat to society over the past decade due to modern technology which has unlocked possibilities for information operations that couldn’t had been imagined before. This situation is unprecedented in human history and leads to an easily manipulated society living in a destructive post-truth world where facts and scientific knowledge mean little. We may however observe, that in the area of online disinformation and information operations there is no effective defense existent yet. At the same time we see that for effective defense, innovation and scalable technology measures are needed in place to help to minimize the impact of diverse information operations and filter bubble effect. With respect to the above we ask a research question, if there could exist a scalable technical solution being able to help to mitigate the negative effect of disinformation by enhancing existing information infrastructure in an unbiased manner to support critical approach in user information behavior. If so, what conditions should be met for it to see the daylight. We narrow our focus to just online disinformation, especially to the social network platforms where we touch the phenomenon of filter bubbles, its role in disinformation dissemination and explore ways how opposing filter bubbles could be bridged. Our research is of theoretical nature. We present a high-level thesis based on the algebraic vector space theory for information representation that we try to support by content analysis of existing interdisciplinary research. We aim to use this theory in an innovative manner for a new theoretical construct with a working title vector of information. We conceptualize if information had qualities expressible by mathematical vectors and we had enough metadata describing its evolution and spread both in time and space, we would be able to measure its occurrence and trace its life-cycle of virality and lineage through online platforms very efficiently. This would allow us to envision space for more information-centric and delivery/recommendation-agnostic method capable of bridging filter bubbles which could make the existing platform algorithms work for us by untangling the online infosphere matrix to allow users easily see beyond any given information artifact themselves. This could open a vast implementation potential for enhancing the way how we work with information today and allow us to go well past existing search results and recommendation systems. The theoretical work is complemented by a conceptual design of an application framework and a provisional page flow model.
