Stories of Adalbert Stifter in Older and Newer Czech Translations from Durych, Siebenscheinová and Karlach: Selection, Comparison and Characterization

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the Czech translations of two short stories from the Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter. These stories are Hvozd and Horský křišťál. These stories have been translated by renowned translators Bohuslav Durych, Anna Siebenscheinová and Hanuš Karlach. In the practical part, there is shown how these translators translate differently and originally some interesting words, phrases, local names, etc. The thesis presents also other translators who translated Stifter's work from the beginning to the present. The work also deals with the life and work of Stifter, his era and generations.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá českými překlady dvou povídek rakouského spisovatele Adalberta Stiftera. Jedná se povídky Hvozd a Horský křišťál. Tyto povídky přeložili tři renomovaní překladatelé Bohuslav Durych, Anna Siebenscheinová a Hanuš Karlach. V praktické části je ukázáno, jak tito překladatelé rozdílným a originálním způsobem přeložili některá zajímavá slova, spojení, místní jména apod. V práci jsou uvedeni také jiní překladatelé, kteří přeložili Stifterova díla od začátku až do současnosti. Práce se zabývá rovněž životem a dílem Stiftera, jeho dobou a generací.
