Self-regulation in young people and their parents in context of personality traits, self-esteem and self-efficacy: a two-generation study

Abstract:

Seberegulace je klíčovým procesem vedoucím k úspěšnému vývoji a stárnutí člověka. Nicméně téma mezigeneračního přenosu seberegulace dosud nebylo velice prozkoumáno. Tato práce se proto zabývá mezigeneračním přenosem seberegulačních mechanismů selekce, optimalizace a kompenzace (SOC) u mladých lidí a jejich rodičů v kontextu self-esteem, self-efficacy a osobnostních rysů Big Five. Teoretická část práce poskytuje přehled klíčových konstruktů a jejich výzkumu, které se týkají naší studie. Empirická část práce analyzuje data sesbíraná od 55 rodin, tj. mladých lidí (18 – 42 let) a jejich rodičů (matky 39 – 70 let; otcové 40 – 74 let). Bivariační korelace ukázaly, že mezigenerační vztah SOC mechanismů je sice signifikantní, ale ne příliš těsný. Parciální korelace ukázaly, že ani self-esteem mladých lidí ani jejich self-efficacy neinteraguje s mezigeneračním přenosem SOC mechanismů. Další korelace ale ukázaly, že osobnostní rysy Big Five mladých lidí a rodičů mají efekt na mezigenerační přenos SOC mechanismů. Detailní výsledky spolu s diskuzí a limity výzkumu jsou prezentovány na konci práce.

Abstract:

Self-regulation is a key process to successful development and aging. However, the intergenerational transmission of self-regulation has not been addressed largely. Therefore, this thesis explores the intergenerational transmission of the self-regulatory mechanisms of selection, optimization and compensation (SOC) of young people and their parents in context of self-esteem, self-efficacy and Big Five personality traits. The theoretical part provides an overview of the key constructs and research related to the present study. The empirical part analyses data from 55 families, i.e. offspring (aged 18 to 42 years) and their parents (mothers aged 39 to 70 years; fathers aged 40 to 74 years). Bivariate correlations showed that the intergenerational transmission of SOC mechanisms is significant but rather weak. Partial correlations found that neither offspring’s self-esteem nor their self-efficacy interacts with the intergenerational transmission of SOC mechanisms. Furthermore, there was some effect of offspring’s and parents’ Big Five personality traits on the intergenerational transmission of SOC mechanisms. The detailed findings as well as the limitations of the study are presented and discussed at the end of the thesis.
