Maturita Solutions Pre-Intermediate: How Does the Textbook Meet Actual Maturita Requirements?

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce vyhodnocuje, jak učebnice 'Maturita Solutions Pre-Intermediate' naplňuje požadavky maturitní zkoušky, aby určila její účinnost jako výukový nástroj v českých středních školách. Práce se zaměřuje na Střední školu logistiky a chemie v Olomouci, kde zkoumá, zda učebnice napomáhá studentům v postupu k jazykové úrovni B1 a zda je dostatečně připravuje na ústní části maturitní zkoušky a didaktický test. Analýza ukazuje, že pouze přibližně 18 % obsahu učebnice dosahuje úrovně B1, což naznačuje, že sama učebnice nedokáže dostatečně podpořit studenty v dosažení jazykových požadavků maturitní zkoušky. Navíc, i když se 36 % obsahu učebnice vztahuje k tématům maturitní zkoušky, skutečná užitečnost tohoto obsahu v aplikacích zaměřených na zkoušku je omezená bez zásahu učitele a dalších zdrojů. Toto zjištění zdůrazňuje potřebu, aby instruktoři vedli studenty k efektivnímu rekontextualizování obsahu učebnice. K řešení nedostatků učebnice jsou navrhovány dvě hlavní strategie: urychlení používání učebnice Pre-Intermediate, které by umožnilo brzký přechod k učebnici 'Maturita Intermediate Solutions', navržením alternativních osnov; a doplnění učebnice cílenými texty, úkoly a aktivitami od začátku kurzu. Tyto přístupy mají za cíl zvýšit expozici studentů jazyku na pokročilé úrovni a zajistit robustnější přípravu na Maturitní zkoušku. Novým přínosem této práce jsou detailní seznamy a ‘wordclods’ frází a slov z učebnice, které se shodují s tématy maturitních zkoušek, umožňující jejich využití jejich potenciálu pro využití v kontextu přípravy na Maturitní zkoušku. Tento přístup doplňuje využití nástrojů umělé inteligence pro tvorbu vlastních výukových materiálů, čímž zvyšuje pedagogickou hodnotu stávající učebnice. Nakonec tato práce nejenom zpochybňuje účinnost široce používaného vzdělávacího zdroje, ale také představuje metodu pro zlepšení užitnosti učebnic prostřednictvím materiálů podporovaných AI. Propojením teoretických vhledů s praktickými aplikacemi navrhuje technologicky integrovaný přístup k výuce jazyka, který přímo podporuje přípravu na standardizované zkoušky.

Abstract:

This thesis evaluates the alignment of the 'Maturita Solutions Pre-Intermediate' textbook with the Maturita exam requirements to determine its effectiveness as a teaching tool in Czech secondary schools. With a focus on the School of Logistics and Chemistry in Olomouc, the research assesses whether the textbook facilitates students' progression to B1 language proficiency and adequately prepares them for the oral components of the Maturita exam as well as the didactics test. The analysis reveals that only approximately 18% of the textbook content reaches the B1 proficiency level, suggesting that the textbook alone may not sufficiently support students in meeting the language proficiency requirements of the Maturita exam. Additionally, while 36% of the textbook content relates to Maturita exam topics, the actual utility of this content in exam-focused applications is limited without teacher intervention and additional resources. This disconnect highlights the need for instructors to guide students in recontextualizing the textbook content effectively. To address the textbook’s shortcomings, two main strategies are proposed: accelerating the use of the Pre-Intermediate textbook to allow earlier transition to the 'Maturita Intermediate Solutions' textbook, hence the proposed alternative syllabus designs; and supplementing the textbook with targeted texts, tasks, and activities from the beginning of the course. These approaches aim to enhance student exposure to intermediate-level language and ensure a more robust preparation for the exam. Furthermore, this thesis offers a novel contribution by creating and utilising detailed lists and word clouds of phrases and words from the textbook that align with Maturita topics, demonstrating their potential for discussion in exam contexts. This approach is complemented by the use of artificial intelligence tools to generate custom teaching materials, thereby enhancing the pedagogical value of the existing textbook. Ultimately, this thesis not only questions the efficacy of a widely-used educational resource but also introduces a method for improving textbook utility through AI-supported materials. By bridging theoretical insights with practical applications, it proposes a technologically integrated approach to language teaching that directly supports standardised exam preparation.
