Wavelet transform in time series analysis

Abstract:

Waveletová analýza je jedním z nejrychleji se rozvíjejících nástrojů pro analýzu časových řad. V této práci jsou popsány základy teorie waveletů, jako je definice waveletů a waveletová dekompozice, algoritmus diskrétní waveletové transformace. Tato práce je rovněž věnována popisu a implementaci dvou přístupů k analýze časových řad založených na waveletech. První z nich je waveletová redukce šumu časových řad pro jejich další analýzu pomocí ARIMA modelu. K odhlukování časových řad byly použity různé wavelety (Haarův wavelet, Daubechiova rodina waveletů) a různé metody výběru prahu (univerzální prah, prah na základě SURE principu a prah na základě minimax principu), aby bylo možné porovnat výsledky odhadu ARIMA modelu na odhlukovaných časových řadách a na datech s šumem. Druhým přístupem je popisná analýza časových řad založená na vlastnosti waveletů reprezentovat časové řady jak v časové, tak ve frekvenční oblasti. K porovnání výsledků výpočtu skalogramu a průměrného spektra waveletové škály byly použity různé spojité wavelety (Morletův wavelet, Morseův(3,60) wavelet a bump wavelet).

Abstract:

Wavelet analysis is one of the most rapidly developing and evolving tools for time series analysis. In this thesis basics of the wavelet theory like definition of wavelets and wavelet decomposition, the discrete wavelet transform algorithm are described .This work is also dedicated to describing and implementing two approaches of wavelet-based time series analysis. The first one is wavelet-based denoising of time series for its further analysis using the ARIMA model. Different wavelets (Haar wave-let, Daubechies family wavelets) and different threshold selection methods(Universal threshold, threshold based on SURE principle and threshold based on minimax prin-ciple) were used to denoise the time series in order to compare the results of esti-mating the ARIMA model on denoised time series and on noisy data. The second ap-proach is descriptive time series analysis based on the property of wavelets to repre-sent time series in both time and frequency domain. Different continuous wavelets (Morlet wavelet, Morse(3,60) wavelet and bump wavelet) were used to compare the results of computation of the scalogram and the scale-averaged wavelet spectrum.
