Feminism East and West? A contextualized analysis of framings in the anthology Gender Politics and Post-Communism

Abstract:

Disertační práce Feminismus na Východě a na Západě? Kontextualizovaná analýza rámování ve sborníku Gender Politics and Post-Communism se zaměřuje na diskuze, jak se v rámci feministických teorií a ženských a genderových studií analyticky přistupuje k fenoménům spojeným s post-socialistickými kontexty. Analyzovaný sborník je jednou z prvních z celé řady prací, které prezentují a interpretují dané diskuze ve smyslu feministických debat mezi ‚Východem‘ a ‚Západem‘. Název práce Feminismus na Východě a na Západě? odkazuje ke stati „Feminismus na Východě a na Západě“ editorky sborníku Nanette Funk. Malý, ale zásadní rozdíl mezi těmito dvěma tituly – prvním, formulovaným otázkou, a druhým, vyjádřeným tvrzením – shrnuje cíle práce: zpochybnit to, co je samozřejmé v tvrzení Nanette Funk, analyzovat, co toto tvrzení umožnilo, a zkoumat důsledky v kontextu celého sborníku. Analytický přístup práce čerpá z konceptu situovaného vědění (situated knowledges) Donny Haraway a vybraných úvah Michela Foucaulta o moci/vědění v diskursu. Situované vědění představuje zároveň ohnisko analýzy. Práce se soustřeďuje na způsoby vidění (ways of seeing) (vědecké práce, kategorie, metafory, výzkumné přístupy a technické zařízení), které produkují situovaná vědění, a na související otázky: Které způsoby vidění formují (feministické) vědecké práce? Jaké jsou jejich důsledky? Se kterými pozicemi jsou tyto způsoby vidění spojeny? Vycházejíc z těchto otázek a inspirujíc se Goffmanovou Analýzou rámců (Frame Analysis), disertační práce rozvíjí kontextualizovanou analýzu rámování, která se soustřeďuje na mocnou (re)produkci významu a smyslu v individuálních textech na pozadí diskurzivního kontextu rámování. Analytická část práce – vycházející z kontextu rámování – mapuje způsoby vidění, které charakterizují vybrané texty ze sborníku. Diskutovány jsou jejich důsledky pro (re)produkci mocenských vztahů a produkci feministického vědění vztahujícího se k post-socialistickým kontextům. Prostřednictvím analýzy jednotlivých textů práce dále porovnává způsoby vidění, které se v daných textech uplatňují. Jako hlavní společný jmenovatel analyzovaných způsobů vidění se ukazuje být ‚Východ‘/‚Západ‘ ve smyslu hierarchického rozdílu, který je uznáván a tím i reprodukován ve všech analyzovaných textech. Tento vzorec formuje především pojetí sborníku – tj. způsob, kterým Funk analyticky přistupuje k post-socialistickým kontextům a k tématu žen/genderu v těchto kontextech. Je však patrný také v přístupech jednotlivých analyzovaných příspěvků. Závěry práce znovu spojují tyto poznatky s kontextem rámování a tím také s globálnějšími tématy feministické teorie.

Abstract:

The thesis Feminism East and West? A Contextualized Analysis of Framings in the Anthology Gender Politics and Post-Communism relates to discussions in the context of feminist theories, women’s and gender studies on how phenomena connected to post-socialist contexts are analytically approached. The analyzed anthology is one of the first of a series of accounts which present and interpret these discussions in terms of feminist ‘East/West’ debates. The title of the thesis – Feminism East and West? – refers to Nanette Funk’s (the anthology’s editor) contribution “Feminism East and West”. The small but crucial difference between these two titles – the first constituting a question, the second a statement – epitomizes the goal of the thesis: to question what has been taken for granted in Funk’s statement, to examine what made this statement possible, and to discuss its implications in the context of the whole anthology. The thesis’ approach to analysis is inspired by Donna Haraway’s considerations on situated knowledges which are joined with considerations on power/knowledge in discourse put forward by Michel Foucault. It centers on Haraway’s notion of ways of seeing (scientific accounts, categories, metaphors, research approaches or technical devices) which produce situated knowledges and relates to questions such as: Which ways of seeing shape certain (feminist) scientific accounts? What are their outcomes? What are the positions related to these ways of seeing? Departing from these questions and inspired among others by Goffman’s Frame Analysis, the thesis develops the contextualized analysis of framings as an approach to analysis, focusing on the powerful (re)production of meaning in individual texts, related to a discursive framing context. The thesis’ analytical part, departing from the framing context, maps the ways of seeing which characterize the texts selected from the anthology, and discusses their outcomes as regards the (re)production of power relations and the production of feminist knowledge related to post-socialist contexts. Based on this analysis at the level of individual texts, it also compares and contrasts the ways of seeing identified as characterizing the selected texts. This reveals a central common denominator of the analyzed ways of seeing in terms of a hierarchical ‘East/West’ difference, which is acknowledged and hence (re)produced in all the texts studied. This pattern molds, first and foremost, the conceptualization of the anthology – that is, Funk’s way of approaching post-socialist contexts and the topic of women/gender in these contexts – but is also detectable in the analyzed contributions. The conclusions of the thesis relate these findings back to the framing context and hence to more global feminist issues and discussions.
