Study of geometry of the seismo-active structure in the epicentral area Nový Kostel (western Bohemia)

Abstract:

Epicentrální oblast Nový Kostel je nejvíce seismicky aktivní oblastí v regionu západní Čechy/Vogtland a je charakteristická zemětřesnými roji. Velmi blízko této epicentrální oblasi probíhají okrajové zlomy chebské pánve, považované za ssz. pokračování mariánskolázeňského zlomu, ale geometrie fokální zóny není zcela totožná s geometrií těchto zlomů. Studium geometrie aktivní struktury je tedy důležité pro interpretaci geneze zemětřesení a geodynamiky oblasti. V této práci je podrobně popsána geometrie aktivní struktury na základě lokace hypocenter zemětřesení a pomocí statistického vyhodnocení geometrie fokálních mechanismů. Využitá seismická data pocházející ze sítě KRASNET zahrnují více než 5000 lokalizovaných hypocenter z epicentrální oblasti Nový Kostel z let 1991-2008 a lze v nich rozeznat 55 mikro-rojových sekvencí. Výsledky ukazují, že je aktivní struktura umístěna v hloubce 5-12,5 km se směrem sklonu 262° a sklonem 80°, nejmělčí část fokální zóny má trochu menší sklon a hloubka aktivní struktury roste k jihu. Hypocentra zemětřesení nejsou v celé struktuře rozmístěna rovnoměrně a lze je na základě polohy rozdělit do pěti skupin označených A, B, C, D a E. Z hypocenter mikro-rojových sekvencí je díky diskovitému tvaru distribuce možné získat geometrické parametry zlomových struktur, na kterých mikro-roje vznikaly. Potom při porovnání statistického vyhodnocení geometrických parametrů zlomových struktur, geometrie celé fokální zóny a statistického vyhodnocení geometrie fokálních mechanismů lze zjistit, že jsou zlomové struktury uspořádány ve fokální zóně jako kulisy s průměrným směrem sklonu 271° a sklonem 86°. Směr sklonu je celkem rozmanitý, zatímco sklon tíhne k jedné průměrné hodnotě. Z výsledků vyplývá, že seismicky aktivní struktura v epicentrální oblasti Nový Kostel úzce souvisí s mariánskolázeňským zlomem a nachází se na křížení mariánskolázeňského zlomu (SSZ-JJV) a zóny Počátky-Plesná (S-J).

Abstract:

The epicentral area Nový Kostel is the most seismically active area in the region of western Bohemia/Vogtland and it is characteristic by earthquake swarms. Very close to this epicentral area marginal faults of the Cheb basin that are considered as a NNW continuation of the Mariánské Lázně fault are located. But the geometry of the focal zone is not identical with the geometry of these marginal faults. Study of geometry of the active structure is therefore important for the interpretation of the genesis of earthquakes and geodynamics in this area. This study describes in detail the geometry of the seismo-active structure using location of hypocenters and statistical evaluation of the geometry of focal mechanisms. The seismic data used for this study originate from the network KRASNET which includes more than 5000 localized hypocenters from the epicentral area Nový Kostel from years 1991-2008 and in which 55 micro-swarms can be recognized. The results show that the seismo-active structure is located 5-12,5 km deep with direction of inclination of 262° and inclination of 80°. The shallowest part of the focal zone has a slightly lower slope and the depth of the structure increasing to the south. Hypocenters of the earthquakes are not evenly distributed and can be divided into five groups labelled A, B, C, D and E. From the disc-shape distribution of the hypocenters of the micro-swarms, the geometric parameters of the fault structures in which the micro-swarms originated can be obtained. Subsequent comparison of the statistical evaluation of fault structures geometric parameters, the geometry of the entire focal zone and the statistical evaluation of focal mechanisms shows that the fault structures are arranged in the focal zone as a coulisse, with an average direction of inclination of 271 ° and inclination of 86°. The direction of inclination varies while the inclination leads to one average value. The results show that the seismo-active structure in the epicentral area Nový Kostel is closely related to the Mariánské Lázně Fault and it is located at the crossing Mariánské Lázně Fault (NNW-SSE) and the Počátky-Plesná zone (N-S).
