Income inequality and the dynamics of the shadow economy

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je prozkoumat vztah mezi příjmovou nerovností a dynamikou stínové a oficiální ekonomiky v České republice. V rámci teoretické části je představena problematika tohoto vztahu na základě dostupné literatury a panelových regresí s fixními efekty. Rovněž je zde představen modelový přístup, který je nástrojem pro analýzu tohoto vztahu. Jedná se o dynamický stochastický model všeobecné rovnováhy (DSGE) se stínovou ekonomikou a heterogenními domácnostmi odhadovaný na reálných datech od 1. čtvrtletí 2009 do 4. čtvrtletí 2019. Praktická část se zaměřuje na odhad tohoto modelu a následnou analýzu výsledků. Jsou zde diskutovány aposteriorní hustoty parametrů, impulzní odezvy jednotlivých modelových šoků a historická šoková dekompozice Giniho koeficientu. Výsledky ukázaly, že vztah mezi stínovou ekonomikou a Giniho koeficientem nemusí být jednoznačný a závisí na příčinách, které ke změně v rozsahu stínové ekonomiky vedou.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship between income inequality and the dynamics of the shadow and official economy in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part introduces the issues related to this relationship based on available literature and panel regressions with fixed effects. A model approach is also presented as a tool for analyzing this relationship, which is a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model with a shadow economy and heterogeneous households estimated on real data from the first quarter of 2009 to the fourth quarter of 2019. The practical part focuses on estimating this model and subsequently analyzing the results. Posterior parameter densities, impulse responses of individual model shocks, and historical shock decomposition of the Gini coefficient are discussed. The results showed that the relationship between the shadow economy and the Gini coefficient may not be a straightforward one and depends on the causes that lead to changes in the scope of the shadow economy.
