Nabonidus and his role in the historical evolution of Mesopotamia

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá posledním králem Babylonie, jenž završil období babylonské samostatnosti, přičemž nástupnickým státem se stává Achaimenovská Persie s Kýrem Velikým. Chaldejský panovník Nabonid se snažil svou vládou a náboženskými reformami upevnit svou říši a sjednotit její náboženský systém. Jeho záměr byl však neúspěšný kvůli silné opozici zakořeněné v hlavním městě Babylonu. Nabonid se ale do dějin Babylonie zapsal také jako skvělý stavitel. Zrekonstruoval jedno z měst, kde bylo uctíváno měsíční božstvo Sín a to Charrán. Město Charrán bylo rovněž místem, kde vykonávala svou kněžskou službu Nabonidova matka. Král se snažil budovat i obchodní kontakty na důležitých obchodních trasách, například v oáze Tajmá, kde zůstal po mnoho let. Kvůli jeho nepřítomnosti se nemohly konat novoroční slavnosti, které byly velmi důležité a vnitřní opozice posílila. Podle Kýrových nápisů o dobytí Babylonu byl Nabonid neoblíbeným panovníkem, který si znepřátelil bohy a sám Kýros byl uctíván jako osvoboditel dobytého Babylonu.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis deals with the last king of Babylonia, who finished the period of babylonian independence while its successor state became Achaemenid Persia with Cyrus the Great. Chaldean sovereign tried to consolidate his empire with his reign and religious reform and unify its religious system. His purpose was unsuccessful because of the strong opposition in the capital Babylon. Nabonid is written to the history of Babylonia as a great builder too. He reconstructed one of the cities, where the moon god Sin was worshiped, and it was Harran. The city of Harran was the place, where his mother performed her priestly ministry. The king tried to found business contacts in important trade routes, for example in oasis Tayma, where he stayed for many years. Because of his absence there could not be performed the new years celebrations which was very important and the internal opposition got stronger. According to Cyrus´ inscriptions Nabonid was unpopular ruler, who antagonized Gods and Cyrus himself was worshiped as rescuer of conquered Babylon.
