Ecology of fish communities in the National Park Niokolo Koba, Senegal

Abstract:

Tato práce navazuje na bakalářskou práci Rybí společenstva řek západní Afriky. Pojednává o společenstvu ryb Národního parku Niokolo Koba v Senegalu, popisuje abiotické podmínky, které ovlivňují složení společenstev ryb a podává přehled studií ryb v dané oblasti. Práce obsahuje seznam druhů ryb, které byly nalezeny během čtyřletého výzkumu ve středním toku Gambie, jsou zde uvedeny způsoby jejich odlovu a charakterizovány jednotlivé lokality. Seznam zahrnuje 63 druhů sladkovodních ryb v 22 čeledích a 9 řádech, které byly odloveny na 88 lokalitách, členěných do 21 skupin podle habitatu. Společenstvo ryb je charakterizováno seznamem druhů, abundancí, indexy diverzity a dominancí. Společenstvo je vyrovnané a nejpočetnějším druhem je Rhabdalestes septentrionalis. Vybraná populace Barbus macrops byla zkoumána z hlediska somatické kondice a velikostního složení. Je možno říct, že řeka Gambie není typickou řekou súdánské podoblasti, protože v sobě kombinuje složky súdánské a guinejské ichtyofauny. Ve srovnání s podobně velkými řekami ve vlhčích oblastech Afriky se v ní vyskytuje méně druhů.

Abstract:

This thesis is continuation of BSc. thesis titled „The fish communities of West African rivers“ and focuses on fish communities of the National park Niokolo Koba in Senegal. It describes abiotic factors affecting structure of fish communities and presents an overview of ichthyological studies from the area. The thesis includes species list from a four-year research on the middle reach of the Gambia River, presents methodology of sample collection and characteristics of particular collection sites. The species list includes 63 species from 22 families and 9 orders, which were sampled at 88 localities divided into 21 groups according to habitat type. Fish community is characterized by species list, abundance, diversity indices and dominance. The overall fish community in the National park has high eveness. The most abundant species was Rhabdalestes septentrionalis. The chosen populations of Barbus macrops were studied in terms of condition and size, using lipid extraction as a surrogate for body condition. It is possible to conclude that the River Gambia is not a typical river of Soudanian region, because it combines Soudanian and Guinean compenents. Compared to other West African rivers of similar size, especially with rivers from humid regions, the Gambia has lower species richness.
