Tolerance of ethnic minorities and its relationship with intergroup contact and outgroup attitudes

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci jsme si kladly dvě hlavní otázky: (1) jak mohou být lidé rozděleni do skupin na základě jejich tolerance a (2) jaký je vztah mezi tolerancí, meziskupinovým kontaktem a postoji? Při měření tolerance jsme se zaměřili na přímé měření hodnocení a akceptace chování, což nám umožnilo rozlišit mezi chováním tolerovaným (akceptovaným do větší míry než pozitivně vnímaným) a sympatickým (akceptovaným, zatímco pozitivně vnímaným). Náš výzkumný vzorek se skládal z České většiny (N=7 149), která vyjadřovala toleranci vůči chování Vietnamské menšiny. Za užití analýzy latentních profilů jsme identifikovali 4 skupiny s rozlišnými vzorci odpovědí reprezentující toleranci (pozitivní, spíše tolerantní, ovlivnění a netolerantní). Mediační analýza ukázala, že postoje vysvětlují vztah mezi meziskupinovým kontaktem a náležitostí ke skupině, když porovnáváme pozitivní skupinu se spíše tolerantní, ale při porovnání netolerantní skupiny se spíše tolerantní nikoliv. Porovnání skupiny ovlivnění a spíše tolerantní ukázalo, že postoje mohou změnit valenci tohoto vztahu a způsobit, že lidé jsou s větší pravděpodobností členy skupiny ovlivnění namísto spíše tolerantní i navzdory více pozitivnímu či méně negativnímu kontaktu.

Abstract:

In this master thesis, we explored two main questions: (1) how can people be divided into subpopulations based on tolerance and (2) what the association between tolerance, outgroup attitudes and intergroup contact is? We focused on direct measurements of evaluation and acceptance of behaviour, which allowed us to distinguish, when is behaviour tolerated (accepted more positively than evaluated) and when it is sympathized (accepted while positively evaluated). Our sample consisted of the Czech majority (N=7 149), which expressed tolerance towards the Vietnamese minority behaviour. Using the latent profile analysis, we have identified four groups of people with different response patterns regarding tolerance (positive, mostly tolerant, influenced and intolerant). The mediation analysis showed that intergroup contact is associated with group membership and mediated through outgroup attitudes when comparing the positive group with the mostly tolerant group, but not when comparing the intolerant group with the mostly tolerant group. A comparison of the influenced group with the mostly tolerant group showed that positive outgroup attitudes might change the valence of association between intergroup contact and tolerance and make people more likely members of the influenced group than the mostly tolerant group despite more positive or less negative intergroup contact.
