Negative effects of psychotherapy in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

This qualitative explorative study is focused on the topic of negative effects of psychotherapy. The theoretical introduction provides information about the demarcation of the negative effects and about the existing research findings. The aim of this thesis was to explore the negative effects in the Czech Republic by using qualitative methodology. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants in order to get the research data. The use of thematic analysis led to identification of seven main themes, which reflect the clients’ experience with negative effects: “negative effects emerge from intense self-observation”, “leaving responsibility to therapist reinforces client’s passivity”, “therapist elicits negative reactions in client”, “therapy causes difficulties at work/school, in social relationships and in everyday life”, “psychotherapy experience results in rejection of further treatment”, “therapy does not lead to improvement” and “therapy contributes to building a negative self-image.” The results of this research, based on their presence in all the cases, indicate that the negative effects are legitimate. The findings are discussed in relation to the contemporary studies in this area of research. In conclusion, possible implications in the psychotherapy practice are mentioned.

Abstract:

Kvalitatívna exploratívna štúdia sa zaoberá problematikou negatívnych efektov psychoterapie. Teoretický úvod poskytuje informácie o ich vymedzení a doterajších výskumných zisteniach. Cieľom tejto práce bolo pomocou kvalitatívnej metodológie preskúmať negatívne efekty v Českej republike. Výskumnú vzorku tvorilo osem respondentov, od ktorých boli získané dáta prostredníctvom individuálnych pološtrukturovaných rozhovorov. Tematickou analýzou bolo identifikovaných sedem hlavných tém, ktoré odrážajú skúsenosti klientov s negatívnymi efektami: „negatívne efekty vznikajúce „vŕtaním sa v sebe““, „prenechanie zodpovednosti na terapeutovi posilňuje u klienta pasivitu“, „terapeut u klienta vyvoláva negatívne reakcie“, „terapia negatívne zasahuje do pracovnej/školskej oblasti, sociálnych vzťahov a každodenného života“, „skúsenosť s terapiou odrádza od ďalšieho sedenia/terapie“, „terapia neprináša žiadne zlepšenie“ a „terapia prispieva k vytváraniu negatívneho sebaobrazu.“ Výsledky tohto výskumu ukázali, že u všetkých respondentov sa v priebehu terapie objavili negatívne efekty, čo poukazuje na opodstatnenosť ich existencie. Zistenia sú diskutované v kontexte súčasných výskumov z danej oblasti. Záver práce odkazuje na možné implikácie nových poznatkov do terapeutickej praxe.
