The Elfdalian Language as a Norse Treasure. Feelings about Use and Preservation of Elfdalian

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the attitudes to the Elfdalian language and its use and preservation depending on the respondent's age, geographic domicile and language usage. The paper has the purpose to explain what leads the respondents to support Elfdalian, what reasons they have to start learning Elfdalian, how often they actually use Elfdalian both passively and actively, and in which contexts they usually speak and write in Elfdalian. I focus on differences between the younger and the older respondents, between their living inside and outside the Älvdalen region and between Elfdalian and non-Elfdalian speakers. Data are based on an online survey processed into tables and charts which provides material for a quantitative analysis leading to discussion and conclusions. The research revealed firstly that the older respondents seem to be the most interested in the preservation of Elfdalian, secondly that the geographic area where respondents live does not seem to be the fundamental factor that makes respondents interested in this language, but rather their birthplace, i.e. the Älvdalen region, evokes the interest in Elfdalian. Thirdly, the respondents fluent in Elfdalian show the smallest differences between passive and active usage of the language. The thesis suggests that Elfdalian is mostly spoken at home among family members. However, social media such as Facebook also play an important part in the usage of Elfdalian today. The respondents' desire to preserve Elfdalian in school proved to be much higher compared to the actual use of Elfdalian in schools nowadays, which is probably the most surprising conclusion that this work provides and that may be of benefit to the Elfdalian speakers.

Abstract:

Tato práce sleduje postoje k elvdalskému jazyku a k jeho užití a zachování v závislosti na věku, domovině a užívání jazyka respondenta. Práce má za úkol zjistit, co dotazované osoby vede k podporování elvdalštiny, jaké důvody je vedou k učení se elvdalštiny, jak často elvdalštinu používají pasivně a aktivně, a jak často a v jakém kontextu nejčastěji elvdalštinou hovoří a píší. Zaměřuji se na rozdíly mezi mladšími a staršími respondenty, mezi respondenty žijícími v regionu a mimo region Älvdalen a mezi elvdalsky hovořícími a nehovořícími respondenty. Data jsou čerpána z online průzkumu a jsou zpracována do tabulek a grafů, což poskytuje materiál pro kvantitativní analýzu vedoucí k diskuzi a závěru. Průzkum zaprvé ukázal, že o otázku zachování elvdalštiny se nejvíce zajímají starší respondenti, zadruhé že zeměpisná poloha bydliště respondenta nehraje zásadní roli pro zájem o tento jazyk, ale spíše rodné místo, tzn. region Älvdalen, vzbuzuje zájem o elvdalštinu. Zatřetí, respondenti plynně mluvící elvdalsky prokazují nejmenší rozdíly mezi pasivním a aktivním užitím tohoto jazyka. V práci se dále ukázalo, že se elvdalštinou nejvíce mluví doma mezi členy rodiny. Sociální media jako Facebook ovšem též hrají významnou roli v používání elvdalštiny v dnešní době. Touha dotazovaných osob zachovat elvdalštinu ve škole je mnohem větší ve srovnání se skutečným aktuálním používám tohoto jazyka ve školách, což je možná nejvíce překvapivý závěr, který tato práce poskytuje a ze kterého mluvčí elvdalštiny mohou těžit.
