Dermatoglyphics of Inhabitants of the Skalica Discrict

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to make a pilot dermatoglyphic study of the population of Skalica district (in Slovakia) and compare the results to published data of Slovak population. To carry out this study, fingerprints of 167 women and 128 men were collected and quantitative and qualitative dermatoglyphic traits were assessed. The analyzes revealed statistically significant gender differences, as well as differences between right and left hand in relation to the frequency distribution of the fingerprint patterns. The results also confirmed general trends that indicate that women are more likely to have ulnar loops and arches, and men are more likely to have whorls. A further trait that was analyzed was the rotation direction of whorls where results showed that the most common rotation direction is counterclockwise. Right and left hands (in both males and females) confirmed highly statistically significant differences showing that right hands are more likely to have a counterclockwise rotation whereas left hands are more likely to have a clockwise rotation. Finally, non-parametric test was used to identify differences in the quantity of epidermal ridges. Results revealed statistically significant gender differences between the ulnar ridge count on the first and second fingers, and the radial ridge count on the first and fifth fingers. A result of the test confirmed that, on average, women have fewer papillary lines than men, and also confirmed dermatoglyphic trends for the Slovak population. The results of this study contribute to the results of dermatoglyphic studies from Slovakia.

Abstract:

Cieľom bakalárskej práce bolo vytvoriť novú dermatoglyfickú štúdiu obyvateľov Skalického okresu, a porovnať zistené výsledky s publikovanými údajmi o dermatoglyfickej variabilite slovenskej populácie. Študovaný materiál tvorili odtlačky prstov 167 žien a 128 mužov. Hodnotené boli kvantitatívne a kvalitatívne znaky. V študovanej vzorke boli preukázané štatisticky významné medzipohlavné a stranové rozdiely vo frekvencií vzorov. Výsledky potvrdili všeobecné trendy o tom, že u žien sa častejšie vyskytujú ulnárne kľučky a oblúčiky, u mužov víry. V sledovanej vzorke prevažovala rotácia vírov proti smeru hodinových ručičiek. Stranové rozdiely v rotácií vírov boli u mužov aj u žien vysoko štatisticky významné. Na pravej ruke prevažovala rotácia proti smeru hodinových ručičiek, na ľavej ruke rotácia v smere hodinových ručičiek. Boli preukázané štatisticky významné medzipohlavné rozdiely ulnárnej kvantitatívnej hodnote (ridge-count) na prvom a druhom prste, tiež radiálnej kvantitatívnej hodnote vzoru na prvom a piatom prste. Ženy mali priemerne menej papilárnych línií ako muži, čím boli potvrdené trendy pre slovenskú populáciu. Výsledky tejto štúdie prispievajú k doterajším výsledkom dermatoglyfických štúdií z oblasti Slovenska.
