The Representation of Woman in Quebecois and Canadian Romans

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis consists of a comparative analysis of a depiction of the main female characters in the novels Surfacing by Canadian author Margaret Atwood and Kamouraska by Quebec author Anne Hébert. The theoretical part briefly introduces history and development of feminism in Quebec and Canada, which serves for a depiction of the position of women in society and consequent efforts to improve their situation. Afterwards, the work presents the biographies of the authors and their view of feminism, which is reflected in their literary work and a brief summary of particular novels. In the practical part, the thesis analyses female characters individually and lastly compare them.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca pozostáva z komparatívnej analýzy zobrazenia hlavných hrdiniek v románoch Surfacing od kanadskej autorky Margaret Atwood a Kamouraska od quebeckej autorky Anne Hébert. V teoretickej časti je stručne predstavená história a vývoj feminizmu v Quebecu a Kanade, ktorá slúži pre predstavenie postavenia žien v spoločnosti a následné úsilie o zlepšenie ich situácie. Následne práca predstavuje životopisy autoriek a ich pohľad na feminizmus, ktorý sa prejavoval v ich tvorbe spoločne so stručným obsahom diel. V praktickej časti, sa práca zaoberá analýzou jednotlivých ženských postáv a ich porovnaním.
