Ketamine outside clinical practice: a study of recreational use

Abstract:

Výzkum ketaminu na klinické populaci se v psychologii stává stále populárnějším. I když prevalence užívání ketaminu je spíše minoritní, oproti jiným látkám, k jeho zneužívání k rekreačním účelům stále dochází, obzvlášť pro jeho halucinogenní a disociativní efekty. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jaká je zkušenost rekreačních uživatelů ketaminu. Byly provedeny čtyři polostrukturované rozhovory s uživateli zkoumané skupiny. Analýza byla provedena na idiografické a mezisubjektové úrovni pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Z rozhovorů mapujících zkušenost uživatelů vyplynulo sedm témat vyskytujících se u většiny participantů: ketamin jako nástroj pro práci s vlastní myslí, seberozvoj, rozdílný potenciál užití o samotě oproti užití s ostatními, podpora interakce s lidmi, vnímání rozdílu mezi užíváním nelegálního ketaminu a jiných legálních látek, kontrola a informovanost, obtížnost popsat stav. Předložená práce umožnila nahlédnout do jedinečných příběhů rekreačních uživatelů ketaminu, popsat jejich myšlenky o užívání a obohatit tak dosavadní empirické poznání o komplexní kvalitativní data týkající se rekreační konzumace této látky.

Abstract:

Research on ketamine within the clinical populations is becoming increasingly popular in psychology. Although the prevalence of ketamine use is rather minor compared to other substances, its misuse for recreational purposes continous to occur, particulary due to its hallucinogenic and dissociative effects. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of recreational ketamine users. Through interpretative phenomenological analysis, four semistructured interviews were conducted. The analysis was conducted at both idiographic and intersubjective levels. Seven themes emerged from the interviews, mapping the experiences of users and occurring in the majority of the sample: ketamine as a tool for working with one's own mind, selfdevelopment, different potential uses alone versus with others, support for interaction with people, perception of the difference between using illegal ketamine and other legal substances, control and awareness, difficulty in describing the state. The presented study provided insight into the unique stories of recreational ketamine users, described their thoughts on use, and enriched existing empirical knowledge with comprehensive qualitative data regarding recreational consumption of this substance.
