The influence of self-reported olfactory functioning on the attitude toward seeking a romantic relationship in the young adulthood

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá faktory, které ovlivňují postoj k hledání vztahu. Konkrétněji se práce zaměřuje na faktor čichu, zkoumá, zda bude subjektivně posuzovaná kvalita čichové funkce a s čichem související kvalita života nějakým způsobem ovlivňovat postoj k hledání partnera. Práce se zaměřuje na nezadané mladé dospělé, tedy osoby ve věku 18–30 let, a to jak na muže, tak na ženy. V teoretické části je věnována pozornost funkci čichu v každodenním životě. Je zmíněna problematika čichových dysfunkcí. Práce se zabývá také oblastmi lidské-ho života, jejichž kvalita je na kvalitě čichové funkce závislá a které zasahují do oblasti partnerských vztahů. Do teoretické části jsou dále zahrnuta specifika zkoumané populace a další možné faktory působící na vztahové chování osob. Pro sběr dat byl zvolen kvantitativní přístup. Data byla sesbírána pomocí dotazníkového šetření. Použité otázky v dotazníku přímo vycházejí z původních nástrojů měřících použité konstrukty. Na základě výsledků se nepodařilo potvrdit hypotézy o vlivu subjektivně posuzované čichové funkce a s čichem související kvality života na postoj k hledání vztahu u mladých dospělých. Také se nepodařilo ověřit hypotézy o vlivu těchto prediktorů na zkušenost s kratšími známostmi, vztahy na jednu noc atd. Výsledky také neprokázaly vztah mezi úzkostí z romantických schůzek, self-esteemem, vazbovou úzkostností, vazbovou vyhýbavostí a postojem k hledání vztahu, který byl na základě empirických zjištění očekáván. Tyto výsledky jsou dále diskutované společně s limity výzkumu, které mohly mít na výsledky této práce vliv.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the factors that influence the attitude towards seeking a relationship. More specifically, the work focuses on the factor of smell, it examines whether the self-reported olfactory functioning and olfaction related quality of life will somehow influence the attitude towards seeking a partner. The work focuses on single young adults, i.e., persons aged 18-30, both men and women. In the theoretical part, attention is paid to the function of smell in everyday life. The issue of olfactory dysfunctions is mentioned. The work also deals with areas of human life, which quality depends on the olfaction functioning, and which affect the area of romantic relationships. The specifics of the researched population and other possible factors affecting the relational behavior of persons are also included in the theoretical part. A quantitative approach was chosen for data collection. Data were collected using a questionnaire survey. The questions used in the questionnaire are directly based on the original instruments measuring the used constructs. Based on the results, it was not possible to confirm the hypotheses about the influence of the self-reported olfactory functioning and olfaction- related quality of life on the attitude towards seeking a relationship in young adults. It also failed to prove the hypotheses about the influence of these predictors on the experience of shorter dating, one-night stands, etc. The results also did not show a relationship between dating anxiety, self-esteem, attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, and attitude toward seeking a relationship that was expected based on empirical findings. These results are further discussed together with possible limitations that could have influenced the results of this work.
