Multicultural society in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem práce je multikulturní společnost a její podmínky a mechanismy. To, jak se ustanovuje, na jakých principech funguje a jaké podmínky vyžaduje či nevyžaduje její fungování. Práce se snaží uvést do problematiky multikulturalismu pomocí identifikace, a jazyka především. Člověk se musí s nějakou skupinou identifikovat, aby se mohl považovat a být považován za jejího člena. Koexistence skupin a jejich soužití na území jednoho státu, který má svoji majoritu, je potom otázkou strategie, kterou vláda majoritní společnosti k minoritám zaujme. V ČR je aktuální strategií liberálně-demokratický multikulturalismus, který se pokouší překlenout potíže, které neřeší univerzalismus. V případě dlouhodobého soužití skupin na jednom území dochází na integraci. Práce se snaží nastínit roviny integrace i různé strategie, které mohou být přijímány jak majoritou, tak i minoritami. Příslušnost do skupin je důležitým faktorem v životě jedince. Uznání těchto skupin za rovnocenné přímo souvisí s jeho sebeúctou. Východiska z nastíněných možností jsou ve znamení tolerance a ideálů rovnosti, jiné přístupy mohou vést ke konfliktním situacím. Hlavním příkladem, který je diskutován v celé práci je možnost zavedení romštiny jako volitelného předmětu do českých základních škol. Multikulturní společnosti jsou jistě rozmanité a obohacující, ale také mají řadu rizik. Tato rizika vyvstávají z problematického soužití majority a minorit. Závažným rizikem jsou především projevy xenofobní nenávisti. Ty jsou v ČR reprezentovány především neonacistickou frakcí hnutí Skinheads. I přes mnohá rizika a problémy je trend soužití české majority s jejími menšinami nastaven pozitivně. Zvyšuje se tolerance a zavádějí se opatření, která by měla pomoci i k integraci dosud problémových menšin do společnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis deals primarily with the multicultural society, its conditions and mechanisms, how it provides for itself, what are its fundamental principles and what conditions need or need not be met for it to function. The thesis strives to outline the issue of multiculturalism from the point of identification, mainly language. One has to identify themselves with a group to recognize themselves and be recognized as its member. The coexistence of groups within one state having its majority then becomes a question of the majority authorities’ strategy towards the minorities. The Czech Republic currently propagates the strategy of liberal-democratic multiculturalism, which aims at bridging those issues that universalism cannot get over. Any two groups coexisting in one area are bound to integrate. The thesis attempts to sketch the levels of integration along with some strategies that are acceptable for both the majority and the minorities. Identification with groups is a key factor in the life of an individual. Recognition of these groups as equal has a direct impact on the individual’s self-respect. Possible ways out of the outlined issues bear the mark of tolerance and ideals of equality; other approaches may result in conflicts. The main example, which is discussed in whole thesis, is the option of implementing gypsi (language of czech minority, Roms/Gypsis) as an optional subject in czech primary schools. Multicultural societies are indeed varied and enriching but they do represent some risks as well, which have roots in the coexistence of the majority and the minorities. Displays of xenophobic behaviour are among the most serious risks. In the Czech Republic this takes on the form of the extremely right-winged fraction of the skinhead movement. Despite many risks and problematic issues, the trend of the Czech majority’s coexistence with the minorities is set positively. Tolerance is on the rise and steps are being taken to help the integration of the so far problematic minorities into the society.
