The European Green Deal and the Transformation of the Automotive Industry in Europe

Abstract:

Změna klimatu představuje závažný environmentální problém, jenž s sebou přináší negativní dopady na životy mnoha lidí po celém světě. V rámci environmentální politiky Evropské unie byl představen soubor ambiciózních opatření, Evropská zelená dohoda, jejímž cílem je nasměřovat Evropu k dosažení klimatické neutrality do roku 2050. Automobilový průmysl, jako jeden z významných producentů emisí skleníkových plynu, hraje v dosažení tohoto cíle klíčovou roli. Cílem této práce je stanovit, jaký má Evropská zelená dohoda vliv na automobilový průmysl a jeho udržitelnou transformaci v rámci Evropské unie. Na základě systematické literární rešerše a následné komparativní analýzy strategií a výročních zpráv o udržitelnosti tří největších evropských automobilových producentů identifikuje práce dva hlavní trendy udržitelné transformace v rámci tohoto odvětví: zrychlenou elektrifikaci automobilů a zachování produkce konvenčních automobilů, které budou poháněny bezemisními syntetickými palivy. Tato práce zdůrazňuje, že Evropská zelená dohoda a zákaz prodeje nových automobilů se spalovacími motory od roku 2035 představují hlavní hnací sílu transformace automobilového průmyslu v Evropě. Identifikované trendy v transformaci odvětví však budou v průběhu následujících let ovlivněny změnami v preferencích spotřebitelů, situací na trhu, politickým a regulačním prostředím i dostupností potřebné infrastruktury, což vytváří případný prostor pro další výzkum.

Abstract:

Climate change is a serious environmental problem that negatively impacts the lives of many people worldwide. As part of the European Union's environmental policy, a set of ambitious measures, the European Green Deal, has been introduced to set Europe on a path towards climate neutrality by 2050. The automotive industry, as a major emitter of greenhouse gas emissions, has a key role to play in achieving this goal. This thesis aims to determine the impact of the European Green Deal on the automotive industry and its sustainable transformation within the European Union. Based on a systematic literature review and a subsequent comparative analysis of the strategies and annual sustainability reports of the three largest European car manufacturers, this thesis identifies two main trends of sustainable transformation within the sector: the accelerated electrification of cars and the continued production of conventional cars that will be powered by emission-free synthetic fuels. This thesis highlights that the European Green Deal and the ban on the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines from 2035 are the main drivers of the transformation of the automotive industry in Europe. However, the identified trends in the sector's transformation will be influenced by changes in consumer preferences, market conditions, political and regulatory environment and the availability of the necessary infrastructure over the coming years, creating potential scope for further research.
