Family size of two genetically different forms of Eurasian beavers

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci jsou porovnávány velikosti rodin dvou geneticky odlišných populací bobra evropského (Castor fiber). Jedná se o labskou formu a českoleskou populaci. Cílem této práce je vyhodnocení, zda se bude lišit průměrný počet jedinců v rodině českoleské populace a labské formy a jak se budou tyto populace vyvíjet s narůstajícím stářím. Labská forma prošla dvěma fázemi bottleneck efektu, a proto by mohla mít v rodině menší počet členů. Data o početnosti bobrů v rodině labské formy byla získána z odchytů a záznamů fotopastí ze Šluknovského výběžku na podzim roku 2020. Tyto výsledky byly zkombinovány s dříve zjištěnými hodnotami z různě starých populací na Labi. Následně byla všechna tato data porovnána s počtem bobrů v rodinách českoleské populace. Data o českoleské populaci pocházejí z různě starých populací v Českém lese a v Praze. Z výsledků práce vyplývá, že labská forma má v rodině méně jedinců než českoleská populace. V rodině labské formy žije průměrně 3,38 zvířete a v českoleské populaci připadá v průměru 4,87 bobra na rodinu. Rovněž bylo zjištěno, že se velikost rodin českoleské populace s narůstajícím stářím zmenšuje, u labské formy se velikost rodin významně nemění. Dále bylo vyhodnoceno, že jedna fotopast zachytí 76,9 % bobrů v rodině oproti více zařízením najednou.

Abstract:

In this diploma thesis, the sizes of families of two genetically different populations of the European beaver (Castor fiber) are compared. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate whether the average number of individuals in the family of the population from the Český les area and the Elbe form differs and how these populations develop with increasing age. The Elbe form has gone through two phases of the bottleneck effect, and therefore is supposed to have a smaller number of members in the family. Data on the number of beavers in the Elbe form family were obtained from real captures and photo captures of camera traps from the Šluknovský výběžek in the autumn of 2020. These results were combined with previously determined values from variously old populations on the Elbe river. Subsequently, all these data were compared with the number of beavers in the families of the population from the Český les area. Data on the population from the Český les area include variously old populations in the Český les and Prague. The results of the research show that the Elbe form has fewer individuals in the family than the population from the Český les area. An average of 3.38 animals live in a family of the Elbe form, and an average of 4.87 beavers per family in the population from the Český les area. It was also found that the size of the families of the population from the Český les area decreases with its increasing age, in the Elbe form the size of families does not change significantly. It was further evaluated that one camera trap captures 76.9 % of beavers in the family compared to multiple devices at once.
