Characterising British Magical Realism Through Selected Works of Angela Carter, Salman Rushdie, and Jeanette Winterson

Abstract:

Magický realismus, jeden z mnoha postmoderních literárních žánrů, prošel od svých německých počátků ve 20. letech značným vývojem. Autoři z celého světa si osvojili techniku psaní magického realismu a jeho současná podoba nabízí spektrum různých pevně ukotvených a také proměnlivých rysů, které se v jednotlivých zemích liší. Tato práce si klade za cíl vyzdvihnout tyto rysy a dosánhout unifikaci prvků magického realismu, které jsou specifické pro britskou literaturu. Závěrečná teoretická charakteristika žánru je založená na analýze novel Midnight’s Children (Děti půlnoci) a Shame (Hanba) od Salmana Rushdieho, Nights at the Circus (Noci v cirkuse) a Wise Children (Moudré děti) od Angely Carter, a Sexing the Cherry (Jak naštěpit třešeň) a Gut Symmetries (Symetrie odvahy) od Jeanette Winterson. Prvky prolínání, relativizování všeobecně přijatých konceptů, binárních opozic a vypravování nabízející pohled “zvenčí” na dominantní kulturu se ukazují jako nedílná součást děl magického realismu. Závěrečná část práce nabízí vyhodnocení těchto neustále se opakujících prvků magického realismu, což pokládá základy k definování jasných tendencí britského magického realismu.

Abstract:

Magical realism, as one of the many postmodern literary genres, underwent great developments since its early origins in the 1920s Germany. Authors from around the word have appropriated the technique of magical realist writing and its present character offers a spectrum of various firmly grounded, as well as variable features which vary from country to country. This thesis aims at pinpointing such elements, creating a unification of the magical realist features which are characteristic specifically for British magical realist literature. The final theoretical characterisation of the genre is based on the analysis of the novels Midnight’s Children and Shame by Salman Rushdie, Nights at the Circus and Wise Children by Angela Carter, and Jeanette Winterson’s Sexing the Cherry and Gut Symmetries. The elements of transgression, relativizing of generally accepted concepts, binary oppositions and the narrative offering the view ‘from the outside’ of the dominant culture prove inherent to the selected magical realist writings. The final part of the thesis offers an evaluation of these constantly reappearing magical realist elements, which set the base for defining clear British magical realist tendencies.
