Local Variability in Epidermal Ridge Breadth of Distal Phalanges of Hand

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se věnuji lokální variabilitě v tloušťce epidermálních lišt distálních článků prstů a možnostem jejího praktického využití v daktyloskopii. Hlavním cílem práce bylo zjistit, zda se liší tloušťka epidermální lišty ve třech směrech (proximální, laterální a centrální) od standardních trirádií distálních článků prstů ruky, a dále jaké jsou ve vztazích těchto oblastí papilárního terénu věkové a mezipohlavní rozdíly. Záměrem bylo také sledovat, zda tloušťka epidermální lišty souvisí s tělesnou výškou a rozměry rukou. Předmětem studia byly otisky prstů 150 jedinců (50 mužů, 50 žen, 50 dětí). Nově navrženou metodikou byla měřena tloušťka epidermální lišty v oblasti trirádií bříšek prstů a zjištěné hodnoty byly pomocí standardních metod porovnávány mezi sledovanými skupinami (směr od trirádia, věk, pohlaví). Průměrná tloušťka epidermální lišty byla u mužů (0,49 mm a směrodatné odchylky 0,27 mm) statisticky vyšší než u žen (0,41 mm a směrodatné odchylky 0,26 mm), děti (v rozsahu od 2,5 roku do 14 let, medián je 5 let) měly výrazně nižší hodnoty. Ve všech třech skupinách byla statisticky významně vyšší tloušťka epidermální lišty v proximálním směru od trirádia oproti oběma směrům zbývajícím. Tloušťka lišt se statisticky nelišila mezi laterálním a centrálním směrem. Zjištěna byla také pozitivní korelace výšky postavy s tloušťkou epidermální lišty všech prstů u dětí.

Abstract:

In this thesis I study the local variability in epidermal ridge breadth of the distal phalanges and possibility of practical use in dactyloscopy. The main objective was to determine whether the epidermal ridge breadth is different in three directions (proximal, lateral and central) from the standard point of triradius on distal phalanges on the hand. Also, to determine if the epidermal ridge breadth correlates with papillary surface and body structure, age, sexual dimorphism. The intention of the thesis was to find out whether an association exists between the epidermal ridge breadth and the body height and dimensions of the hand. The object of this study were fingerprints of 150 individuals (50 men, 50 women, 50 children). For this study new methods for measurement of epidermal ridge breadth in the region of triradii of distal phalanges of hand were used. The epidermal ridge breadthwas determined and compared between studied groups (the direction of triradia, age, sex) using standard statistical methods. The mean value of epidermal ridge breadth in adult males (mean = 0.49 mm, standard deviation = 0.27 mm) was statistically higher than in adult females (mean = 0.41 mm, standard deviation = 0.26 mm); children (aged from 2,5 to 14 years, median 5 years) showed the lowest mean value. In all three analysed groups (males, females, children), the epidermal ridge breadth has larger mean value in proximal direction from triradius than in lateral or central direction. There were no statistical differences between ridge breadth in lateral and central direction from triradius. A significant positive correlation was also detected between the body size and epidermal ridge breadth of children for all five fingers.
