Between the Lines: A Discourse Analysis of the posters displayed at the Shanghai Marriage Market

Anotácia:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o tématu tzv. „trhu manželství“ v Šanghaji. V první části práce je stručně představena historie manželství v Čínské lidové republice, na níž navazuje podrobnější část s vysvětlením, co si lze pod pojmem „trh manželství“ představit. Pomocí relevantní odborné literatury je nadále objasněno, z jakých důvodů a kým byl tento neformální „trh“ založen. Druhá část je zaměřena na terénní výzkum, pomocí něhož byla nasbírána data z veřejných plakátů, které zde rodiče vystavují v naději, že pro své dospělé děti naleznou vhodné partnery. Tato data jsou nadále rozebrána pomocí metody kritické diskurzivní analýzy, která na základě získaných dat odkrývá určité sociální problémy vyskytující se v současné čínské společnosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the Shanghai marriage market phenomenon. The first part of the thesis provides a brief introduction to the history of the institution of marriage in the People’s Republic of China. It is followed by an explanation of what we can imagine under the term ‘marriage market’. It further clarifies the reasons why these markets are established as well as by whom are they established. The second part deals with the problematics of terrain research. This method was used to acquire data from the publicly displayed marriage posters, which parents display at the marriage market hoping to find suitable partners for their grown-up children. These data are further analyse by methods of critical discourse analysis, which, based on the acquired data, reveals some of the social problems present in the contemporary Chinese society.
