Connection between mindfulness and implicit social stereotypes

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá souvislostí mezi všímavostí a implicitními sociální stereotypy. Hlavním smyslem je pomocí experimentálního designu poukázat na možný potenciál všímavosti jako mechanismu, který redukuje implicitní stereotypy. V práci jsou nejdříve podrobně rozebrána jednotlivá teoretická východiska a možná vysvětlení zapojených procesů. První výzkumná otázka se zabývá tím, zda existuje vztah mezi dispoziční všímavostí a velikostí implicitních stereotypů. Druhá otázka se zaměřuje na vliv zvýšeného stavu všímavosti na redukci implicitních stereotypů. Třetí se pokouší objasnit, zda všímavost má vliv na snížení dopadu primingu. Z výsledků práce je patrné, že všímavost souvisí s celou řadou procesů, které působí na redukci stereotypů. Nicméně nebyl prokázán signifikantní vztah v souvislosti s první výzkumnou otázkou. Nadruhou stranu byl zjištěn vliv zvýšené všímavosti na snižování neuvědomovaných stereotypů, což je v souladu s teoretickým základem práce. V poslední části práce nebyl přítomný vliv všímavosti na priming, který si však lze vysvětlit neúčinností samotné metody primingu, která oproti očekávání působila opačně – stereotypy sama redukovala.

Abstract:

This work examines connection between mindfulness and implicit social stereotypes. Main purpose of this work which is based on experimental design is to point out possible potential of mindfulness as a stereotypes reducing mechanism. At first, I describe particular theoretical foundations in detail and possible explanations of processes involved. First research question consider existence of relation between trait mindfulness and implicit stereotypes. Second research question focuses on impact of heightened state mindfulness on reduction of implicit stereotypes. The third one tries to clarify if the mindfulness has some influence on lowering priming effect. In regard to results, it is obvious mindfulness relates with plenty of processes which are connected with the stereotypes reduction. Nevertheless, there was no significant relationship proven in regard to the first research question. On the other hand, there was found a significant impact of heightened state mindfulness on reduction of implicit social stereotypes, which is in a unity with theoretical foundations. In the last part of the work there was not found any significant influence of mindfulness on priming effect, which may be explained as an ineffectiveness of priming itself, which against the expectancy had the contrary effect – it reduced implicit stereotypes.
