Emotional connotation of colors and color shades depending on personality traits in secondary school students

Abstract:

In this diploma thesis, we focused on the emotional connotation of colors and color shades depending on the personality traits of a high school student. The theoretical part is divided into 4 main chapters. We dealt with colors from a physical point of view, the characteristics of color psychology, its use in practice, and the last chapter was devoted to the trait approach to personality. In the research part, we defined the goal of the diploma thesis, research hypotheses and the research sample, which consisted of 65 high school students aged 15-19. There were 49 women and 16 men. The research methods we chose were of a quantitative nature. The first method was the semantic differential, where students described on 7-point scales what emotions and adjectives they attribute to the selected 8 colors. The second method was the NEO Inventory, which was used to determine the personality traits of students. We processed the obtained data using standard methods of descriptive and parametric statistics. The main idea of the research of this thesis was to find out whether the emotional connotation of colors and color shades is significantly different for women and men. The results of our research indicate that the differences between women and men are not that significant. Statistically significant differences occurred in only 6 cases: in the case of gray color in the question of admiration-disgust and unconscious-conscious. With red color in the question: surprise-expectation, with brown color in passive-active, intellectual-emotional and unconscious-conscious questions. Furthermore, we investigated whether there are differences based on the basic personality trait - neuroticism. In the case of emotionally stable and emotionally unstable individuals, significant differences also occurred in very few cases. Specifically, it was in the case of the blue color in the question: night-day, yellow-piercing-impervious and black permanent-impermanent.

Abstract:

V tejto diplomovej práci sme sa venovali emočnej konotácii farieb a farebných odtieňov v závislosti od osobnostných čŕt žiaka strednej školy. Teoretická časť je rozdelená na 4 hlavné kapitoly. Zaoberali sme sa farbami z fyzikálneho hľadiska, charakteristikou psychológie farieb, jej využitím v praxi a poslednú kapitolu sme venovali rysovému prístupu k osobnosti. Vo výskumnej časti sme si vymedzili cieľ diplomovej práce, výskumné hypotézy a výskumnú vzorku, ktorú tvorilo 65 žiakov stredných škôl vo veku od 15-19 rokov. Žien bolo z toho 49 a mužov 16. Výskumné metódy, ktoré sme si zvolili boli kvantitatívneho charakteru. Prvou metódou bol sémantický diferenciál, kde žiaci popisovali na 7- bodových škálach, aké emócie a adjektíva prisudzujú vybraným 8 farbám. Druhou metódou bol NEO Inventár, ktorým sme zisťovali osobnostné črty žiakov. Získané dáta sme spracovávali pomocou štandartných metód deskriptívnej a parametrickej štatistiky. Hlavnou myšlienkou výskumu tejto diplomovej práce bolo zistiť, či je emočná konotácia farieb a farebných odtieňov signifikantne rozdielna u žien a u mužov. Výsledky našeho výskumu naznačujú, že rozdiely medzi ženami a mužmi nie sú až také významné. Štatisticky signifikantné rozdiely nastali len 6 prípadoch: pri sivej farbe v otázke obdiv-odpor a nevedomý-vedomý. Pri červenej farbe v otázke: prekvapenie-očakávanie, pri hnedej farbe v otázkach pasívny-aktívny, rozumový- citový a nevedomý-vedomý. Ďalej sme zisťovali, či existujú rozdiely na základne osobnostnej črty- neuroticizme. Pri emočne stabilných a emočne nestabilných jedincoch nastali signifikantné rozdiely taktiež len vo veľmi málo prípadoch. Konkrétne to bolo pri modrej farbe v otázke: nočný-denný, žltej farbe- priebojný-nepriebojný a čiernej farbe stály-nestály.
