Community and the Supernatural: The Structure of Communities and the Character of Supernatural Agents in Some Franciscan Legends (1228-1306)

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá charakterem nadpřirozených činitelů a jejich interakcí s dalšími postavami, zejména pak se sv. Františkem z Assisi, ve vybraných františkánských legendách ve vztahu k raně františkánským komunitám, k jejich uspořádání, hodnotám a pojetí autority. Úvodní část práce pojednává o životě sv. Františka, prvotním společenství a také o problémech, které se ještě za světcova života začaly uvnitř nově vzniklého řádu objevovat. V další části jsou popsány stručné dějiny bádání v oblasti františkánské otázky, která se rozvíjela v posledních sto letech, a jsou představena teoretická východiska. Práce vychází především z předpokladu, že sociální uspořádání skupin je úzce spojeno s představami o bozích nebo obecněji o nadpřirozených činitelích, které tyto skupiny uctívají. Práce si klade za cíl důkladnou analýzou vybraných legend z let 1228 1306 zjistit, jak souvisí charakter nadpřirozena a interakce s ním v těchto legendách se způsobem organizace společenství, a také, zda lze vysledovat typické projevy tíhnutí k pólu „církve“, nebo naopak k pólu sekty (ve smyslu weberovských ideálních typů) ve společenstvích, ze kterých tyto legendy pocházejí.

Abstract:

This thethesis deals with the character of supernatural agents and the forms of their interaction with other persons, especially with Saint Francis of Assisi, as presented in selected Franciscan legends. These selected legends are evaluated regarding their structure, values, and the concept of authority they express. The introductory part of the thesis presents a short biography of Saint Francis and a history of the community he initially founded, including problems which beset the newly established order even during the saint’s lifetime. In the main part of the thesis, a short history of scholarship on the Franciscan question, which has been intensively discussed over the last century, is introduced, together with theoretical assumptions on which is this thesis based. The main theoretical assumption is that social structure of a community is closely connected with its ideas about gods, or more generally supernatural agents, who are worshiped by this community. Through a thorough analysis of selected legends written in the period 1228-1306, the thesis strives to ascertain, firstly, how the concept of supernatural and the views on human interaction with it relate to the social organization of Franciscan communities, and secondly, if it is possible to detect a tendency toward social organization and values typical either to a “sect” or “church” (in the sense of Weberian ideal types), dependent on the community in which the relevant texts originated.
