Relations between France and Former Colonies: Case Study of Côte d'Ivoire

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje a hodnotí vztahy Francie a Côte d'Ivoire od vyhlášení nezávislosti tohoto západoafrického státu na Francii v roce 1960 do současnosti. Vývoj vzájemných vztahů obou zemí zkoumá v pěti etapách: od dekolonizace po smrt prvního ivorijského prezidenta v roce 1993, v průběhu 90. let až do prvního vojenského převratu v Côte d'Ivoire v prosinci 1999, v dramatickém období volebního procesu v letech 2000-2002, během ivorijské občanské války rozpoutané v září 2002 a od obratu v mírovém procesu v roce 2007 do současnosti. Práce nabízí pohled do politické, ekonomické a společenské situace v Côte d'Ivoire a uvádí vnitřní a vnější faktory ovlivňující zahraniční politiku Francie obecně vůči frankofonní Africe a na příkladu Côte d'Ivoire.

Abstract:

This paper gives the analysis and the assessment of relations between France and Côte d'Ivoire since 1960 when the independence of this West African state from France was proclaimed. Bilateral relations of both countries are studied in five time periods: from decolonization to the death of the first Ivorian president in 1993, then during 1990s until the first Côte d'Ivoire's military coup in December 1999, in the dramatic period of electoral process 2000-2002, during Ivorian civil war which started in September 2002 and finally from the 2007 turning point in the peace process up to now. The paper offers the view into the political, economic and social situation of Côte d'Ivoire and presents some internal and external factors having an influence on French foreign policy towards francophone Africa both in general and in the case of Côte d'Ivoire.
