Western Aphasia Battery: experimental verification of Naming and Word Finding subtest in the Czech environment

Abstract:

Základní oblastí vyšetření kognitivních funkcí je vyšetření řeči a jazykových schopností. Nejčastější oblastí hodnocení je schopnost pojmenování, proto cílem naší práce byla pilotní jazyková adaptace subtestu Naming and Word Finding z komplexní testové baterie Western Aphasia Battery. Teoretická část definuje fatické funkce a jejich narušení ve formě afázie. Nadále popisuje diagnostický proces vyšetření fatických funkcí a přináší přehled testů, které lze využít pro zhodnocení schopnosti pojmenování. V poslední části mapuje samotný proces adaptace. Studie byla provedena celkem na 174 probandech rozdělených do dvou skupin kontrolní a klinické. Klinická skupina se skládala z probandů, kteří měli diagnostikovanou afázii. Byl prokázán signifikantní rozdíl ve skórech všech částí subtestu u probandů kontrolní a klinické skupiny. Nadále byl potvrzen vliv věku na schopnost pojmenování. Naopak nebyl prokázán vliv pohlaví či vzdělání probanda na jeho výkon v adaptovaném subtestu. Adaptovaný subtest měl adekvátní psychometrické vlastnosti.

Abstract:

The substantial part of cognitive function examination is the evaluation of speech and language skills. The most common area of the evaluation is a confrontation naming, therefore the aim of our study was a pilot language adaptation of the Naming and Word Finding subtest from the comprehensive Western Aphasia Battery. The theoretical part focuses on phatic functions and their disruption in the form of an aphasia. It further describes the diagnostic process of the examination of phatic functions and provides an overview of tests that can be used to evaluate the ability to name. The last part maps the adaptation process itself. The study was performed on a total of 174 subjects. divided into two samples: control and clinical. The clinical sample consisted of subjects who had been diagnosed with aphasia. Significant differences were revealed in all subtest's scores between control and clinical sample. The influence of age on naming ability was further confirmed. On the contrary, the influence of the sex or education on performance in the adapted subtest was not proven. The adapted subtest had adequate psychometric properties.
