Assessing the Impact of Solid Waste Management on the Socio-Economic Development of Ghana. The Case of Greater-Accra Region

Abstract:

Nesprávné zacházení s odpady má závažné zdravotní a ekologické důsledky. Problém generování odpadků je spojen s jejich nesprávným zacházení. Neudržitelné nakládání s odpadkami má větší dopad na obyvatele rozvojových zemí, hlavně na chudé ve městech, než na obyvatele průmyslových zemí. V oblasti Accra v Ghaně je cílem této studie prozkoumat dopad nesprávného zacházení s odpadem na zdraví, vzdělaní dětí a nákladů na svoz odpadků. Nesprávné postupy nakládání s pevným odpadem je zdrojem obav v rozvojových zemích, jako je Ghana, kde správné technologie a techniky pro nakládání s odpady v podstatě neexistují a tím pádem je velký nárust odpadků bez dozoru velkým rizikem znepokojení pro lidské zdraví. Region Accra je rozlohou nejmenší z 10 správních regionů na tomto území zabírá celkovou plochu 3 245 kilometrů čtverečních a má více něž pět milionů obyvatel. Každý rok se asi 20 procednt odpadu vytvořeného v Akkře nerecykluje a neuklidí. Více než polovina populace spoléhá na veřejné skládky a kontejnery na skladování odpadků. Trvá příliš dlouho, než svezou všechen odpad a proto nachází k napadení škůdci. Shromáždená data byla zpracována a vložena do Statistických balíčků pro společenské vědy a později zpracována na průzkum. Podle průzkumu existovala 74,4 procentní souvislost mezi výskytem malárie a tvorbou odpadků. Zpráva navrhuje prosazování zákonů, které podporují udržiteln ost, recyklaci a tříděním odpadu a s ní spojenou minimalizací produkce odpadu. Zavést by se měly i pokuty.

Abstract:

Poor waste management has major a health and environmental consequences. The trash generating problem is paralleled by the waste management challenge. Unsustainable waste management has a greater impact on residents of developing countries, particularly the urban poor, than it does on residents of industrialized countries. In the Greater Accra region of Ghana, this study aims to investigate the impact of poor solid waste management methods on health, school children's education, and waste collection costs. Poor solid waste management practices are a source of concern in developing countries like Ghana, where appropriate waste management technologies and techniques are essentially non-existent and the rapid increase in volumes of unattended to solid wastes with the associated risk to human health and the environment. The Greater Accra Region is the smallest of the 10 administrative regions in terms of area, occupying a total land surface of 3,245 square kilometers and a population of over five million. Each year, around 20% of rubbish created in Accra goes uncollected. Over half of the population relies on public dump sites and containers for solid waste disposal. Pest infestation occurs when garbage collection organizations take too long to remove collected waste from pickup stations. Data collected were processed and entered into the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS version 16) and later processed for analysis. There was a 74.4 percent link between malaria incidence and garbage generation, according to the findings. The report suggests enforcing laws that encourage sustainable waste management by encouraging recycling, sorting of waste and minimizing waste output, as well as introducing and enforcing spot fine regulations for offenders.
