The cultural identity of members of the punk subculture across generations

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá mezigenerační analýzou kulturní identity členů punkové subkultury v ostravském regionu. Cílem je objasnit proces formování této identity a identifikovat hodnoty, které respondenti považují za klíčové pro své fungování v dospělosti. Teoretická část vymezuje koncepty identity, socializace a generací s důrazem na specifika punkového hnutí, jeho historii a ideová východiska, jako jsou anarchismus a DIY etika. Praktická část prezentuje výsledky kvalitativního výzkumu realizovaného metodou hloubkových rozhovorů se zástupci tří generací ostravských punkerů. Práce identifikuje punkovou identitu jako stabilní vnitřní kotvu, která aktérům umožňuje zachovat si autenticitu a kritický odstup od majority napříč životními etapami. Výzkum ukazuje na posun od politického protestu u starších generací k hledání komunitního bezpečí a rodinné kontinuity u generace nejmladší.

Abstract:

This thesis examines an intergenerational analysis of the cultural identity of members of the punk subculture in the Ostrava region. The aim is to clarify the process of forming this identity and to identify the values that respondents consider key to their functioning as adults. The theoretical section defines the concepts of identity, socialization, and generations, with an emphasis on the specifics of the punk movement, its history, and its ideological foundations, such as anarchism and DIY ethics. The practical section presents the results of qualitative research conducted through in-depth interviews with representatives of three generations of Ostrava punks. The thesis identifies punk identity as a stable internal anchor that allows participants to maintain their authenticity and critical distance from the majority across life stages. The research points to a shift from political protest among older generations to a search for community safety and family continuity among the youngest generation.
