The Ancient Water-Organ in the Light of Contemporary Literary Sources and Archaeological Discoveries

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá dějinami vodních varhan v antice od jejich vynálezu ve 3. století př. n. l. až po dobu zániku Západořímské říše, po němž tento hudební nástroj v západní Evropě vymizel. Stručně jsou představeny také starší hudební nástroje, které jsou pokládány za předchůdce varhan (sýrinx a aulos), a další osudy varhan. V hlavní části práce autor shromažďuje a interpretuje dobové literární zmínky, které vypovídají o technických vlastnostech vodních varhan a o jejich využití a postavení v antické společnosti. Dále jsou pak stručně představeny archeologické nálezy antických varhan a poznatky získané na základě jejich studia. V závěru práce autor sumarizuje přínos literárních i archeologických pramenů k danému tématu a poukazuje na problémy spojené s jejich studiem a na možnosti dalšího výzkumu.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis deals with the history of the water-organ in Antiquity since its invention in the 3rd century BC until the fall of the Western Roman Empire, which resulted in the disappearance of this musical instrument in the Western Europe. The older musical instruments, considered to be the ancestors of the organ (syrinx and aulos), are also briefly discussed. In the main part of the thesis the author gathers and interprets contemporary literary references, which tell us about the technical qualities of the water-organ and about its use and status in the Ancient society. Then the archaeological discoveries of the Ancient organs and the pieces of knowledge that were gained through their study are briefly discussed. At the end of the thesis, the author summarizes the contribution of literary and archaeological sources to this issue and points out the problems connected with their study and the possibilities for further research.
