Comparative analysis of Czech translations of English-language musicals

Abstract:

Muzikály jsou v současnosti jedním z nejoblíbenějších divadelních žánrů. Vyprávějí příběhy fiktivních postav žijících v minulosti, přítomnosti, budoucnosti našeho světa, nebo ve zcela fiktivních světech a dávají divákům vše, co si mohou přát: umělecký zážitek z nádherné hudby, působivých kostýmů a dechberoucí scény, únik z reality do jiného světa i pocit sounáležitosti s postavami, jejichž osobnosti a problémy, s nimiž se potýkají v každodenním životě stejně jako každý divák ve svém vlastním, jsou divákovým vlastním odrazem. Co však zajišťuje celosvětový úspěch muzikálů, jsou zahraniční inscenace, které by se neobešly bez vhodných překladů, jež divákům zprostředkovávají nejen samotný příběh v novém jazyce, ale díky pečlivému a složitému procesu překladu jim dopřávají podobný, ne-li úplně stejný zážitek, jaký původní dílo přináší svému obecenstvu. Co činí překlad muzikálu dobrým překladem? Jak lze dosáhnout efektu typického pro jeden jazyk v jazyce jiném, zvláště pokud jsou kulturní a jazykové vlastnosti obou jazyků značně odlišné? Jak se překladatel rozhoduje, jak text přeložit nebo upravit s ohledem na spokojenost publika, jakými pravidly se přitom řídí a co mu může při rozhodování pomoci? Tato práce si klade za cíl odpovědět na všechny tyto otázky a osvětlit procesy, kterými musí překladatel projít, aby vytvořil uspokojivý překlad muzikálu, který si diváci užijí a zapamatují, a to s pomocí analýzy světoznámého muzikálu Jekyll & Hyde autorů Franka Wildhorna, Steva Cudena a Leslieho Bricusse a komparativní analýzy dvou českých překladů vytvořených pro pražské a brněnské nastudování tohoto muzikálu, které dokazují, že dva překladatelé mohou vytvořit překlady, jež se v mnoha ohledech liší, avšak oba vytvářejí úžasné propojení mezi původním textem a inscenací a novým, českým publikem.

Abstract:

Musicals are currently one of the most popular theatre genres. They tell stories of fictitious characters living in the past, present, future of our world or completely fictitious worlds and bring the audience all they could possibly ask for: the artistic experience of wonderful music, impressive costumes and breathtaking stage, the escape from reality into a different world as well as relatableness through the characters' personalities and problems they are facing in their everyday life just like every single audience member does in their own. What ensures the worldwide success of the musicals, however, are the abroad stagings that could not be carried out without proper translations that do not only bring the story to the audience in the new language, but through careful, intricate translation process bring them similar if not the very same experience the original art brings to the source language audience. What makes a musical translation good? How can the effect typical for one language be achieved in another, when the cultural and linguistic properties of the two languages are vastly different? How does a translator decide how to translate or adapt the text with the audience's satisfaction in mind, what rules do they follow and what can help them make the decision? This thesis aims to answer all these questions and shed some light on the processes the translator needs to go to in order to produce a satisfactory, enjoyable translation of a musical the audience will enjoy and remember through analysis of the world famous musical Jekyll & Hyde by Frank Wildhorn, Steve Cuden and Leslie Bricusse, and comparative analysis of the two Czech translations created for the Prague and Brno stagings of this musical, which prove that two translators can provide translations differing in many aspects, yet both creating a wonderful connection between the original text and staging and the new, Czech audience.
