Maintainability of end-to-end automated tests with a focus on robust locators

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je identifikovat špatné návrhové postupy, jež mají negativní vliv na udržovatelnost automatizovaných end-to-end testů, a na jejich základě navrhnout takové, které udržovatelnost podpoří. Implementace představených řešení je ilustrována na optimalizaci projektu automatizovaných testů webové aplikace Správa IDentity v nástroji Robot Framework. Práce je rozdělena do 6 kapitol. První kapitola představuje existující přístupy pro automatizaci end-to-end testů. Druhá kapitola představuje obecnou strukturu projektu v nástroji Robot Framework, společně se souvisejícími knihovnami pro webovou automatizaci. Třetí kapitola obsahuje přehled špatných návrhových postupů, které způsobují obtížné udržování projektu. Zároveň tato kapitola obsahuje navržená řešení. Čtvrtá kapitola se podrobně věnuje způsobům zápisu a ukládání lokátorů webových elementů, jež jsou odolné vůči změnám testované aplikaci. Pátá kapitola obsahuje popis funkcionalit testované aplikace Správa IDentity. Poslední kapitola popisuje optimalizaci projektu automatizovaných testů s použitím představených řešení.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to identify bad design practices that have a negative impact on the maintainability of end-to-end automated tests and by understanding them propose such practices that make the tests more maintainable. The implementation of the presented solutions will be illustrated on the optimization of the automated testing project of the IDentity Management web application in the Robot Framework tool. The thesis is divided into 6 chapters. The first chapter presents existing approaches to end-to-end test automation. The second chapter presents the general structure of a project developed using the Robot Framework tool along with related libraries for web automation. The third chapter provides an overview of bad design practices that cause difficult maintenance. This chapter also includes the proposed solutions. The fourth chapter deals in detail with ways to write and store web element locators that are resistant to changes in the tested application. The fifth chapter contains a description of the functionalities of the tested IDentity Management application. The last chapter describes the optimization process of the automated test project using the proposed solutions.
