The Falklands war and its impact on Margaret Thatcher's politics

Abstract:

Válka o Falklandy byla vedena v roce 1982 mezi Argentinou a Velkou Británií. Navzdory tomu, že válka byla poměrně krátká, měla zásadní vliv na politiku obou zemí. Před válkou, Argentina a Velká Británie byly ve stavu zmatku a politického a hospodářského úpadku. Vítězství Velké Británie vyneslo nepopulární Margaret Thatcherovou na výsluní, zatímco porážka Argentiny ukončila diktátorský režim a umožnila obnovit demokracii v zemi. Cílem této práce je analyzovat historické aspekty sporu mezi Velkou Británií a Argentinou o Falklandské ostrovy a dopad na politiku Margaret Thatcherové a jejího vedení. Práce je rozdělena do třech kapitol. První kapitola analyzuje původ sporu, jeho historické pozadí a probíhající mírové rozhovory. Druhá kapitola je zaměřena na samotný průběh války a reakce britské veřejnosti. Třetí kapitola zkoumá dopad války na politiku Velké Británie zejména na Margaret Thatcherovou jako předsedu vlády.

Abstract:

The Falklands war was fought between Argentina and Great Britain in 1982. Despite the fact that the war was relatively short, it had an underlying impact on the politics of both countries. Before the war, Argentina and Great Britain were in a state of turmoil and political and economic decline. Britain’s victory propelled unpopular Margaret Thatcher to widespread popularity while Argentine’s defeat ended the dictatorial regime and enabled to restore democracy. The aim of this thesis is to analyse historical aspects of dispute between Great Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands and the impact of the conflict on the politics of Margaret Thatcher and her leadership. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter analyses the origin of the dispute, its historical background and diplomatic negotiations to preclude the war. The second chapter focuses on the war process and reactions of the British public. The third chapter examines the impact of the war on the politics of Great Britain particularly on Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister.
