St. Agnes: Her Life and Its Idealization

Abstract:

Anežka Česká je jednou z našich nejvýznamnějších žen 13. století. Pocházela z panovnického rodu, založila v Praze špitál a dva kláštery a stála u zrodu původního mužského církevního řádu. Práce vychází ze dvou interpretací jejího života, z historie a z legendy sepsané za účelem její kanonizace, a snaží se Anežku Českou porovnat s jejími současnicemi, rovněž světicemi. V historické části práce ukazuje zapojení Anežčiny osoby do složité sítě sociálních, kulturních a náboženských vztahů, vyzdvihuje shodné prvky mezi ní a jejími současnicemi, jejími vzory, na základě historických faktů a souvislostí mezi jejich životními osudy. Ze srovnání vyplývá, že z jejích současnic ji ovlivnila Alžběta Durynská, co se týče rozhodnutí pro františkánský řád a stavbu špitálu, a Klára z Assisi, propagující původní ideje Františka z Assisi, se kterou si Anežka dopisovala. Anežčina odlišnost vůči ostatním ženám žijícím ve stejné době tkví v sociálním rozměru její osobnosti. Přestože se ji Legenda snaží vylíčit jako princeznu a následně řeholnici, vstupem do kláštera Anežka neztratila své postavení sestry krále a dokázala ho využít ve prospěch institucí, které založila. Druhou interpretací Anežčina života je legenda. V ní Anežka zosobňuje dokonalou křesťanku, která následuje světice z minulosti, nejvíce sv. Kláru. Splňuje požadavky ctností a skutků františkánské světice té doby, k nimž patřilo zejména fyzické následování Krista v jeho chudobě a strádání. Podobně jako sv. Klára i Anežka je směřována k nejvyššímu ženskému ideálu Panny Marie. Ze srovnání jednotlivých legend nelze mezi Anežkou a jejími současnicemi hledat výrazné rozdíly, protože všechny podléhají podobnému vzoru. V důsledku hagiografického podání a ztotožnění s jinými světicemi, především sv. Klárou, Anežka splňuje obraz světice 13. století, i když události v jejím historickém životě dokládají poněkud odlišný obraz, především v otázkách dodržování františkánské chudoby a v důsledcích Anežčina postavení jako ženy z panovnického rodu.

Abstract:

St. Agnes is one of the most important women of 13th century. She was born in the royal family, she founded a hospice and two convents in Prague and she stood by the foundation of the man’s order. There are two interpretations of her life in my thesis, the historical view and the view coming from the Legend, written by the unknown hagiographer for the purpose of the canonization. St. Agnes is compared with her contemporary women, female saints. In the historical part thesis shows Agnes’ involvement into the complex of social, cultural and religious relations, emphasizes the same aspects between her and female saints of 13th century, according to the historical facts and the connections between their lives. She followed St. Elisabeth of Thuringia (in a decision for the Franciscan order and foundation of the hospice) and her pen-friend St. Clara of Assisi, promoting the authentic ideas of Francis of Assisi. The most significant difference between St. Agnes and other woman saints is in her status. Although the Legend describes St. Agnes as the princess and the nun, in fact she kept her status of king’s sister and she used it for the benefit of the institutions that she founded. Next interpretation of St. Agnes’ life is the legend, where she is represented as the perfect Christian, following the female saints of the past, particularly St. Clara. She has got all virtues of true Franciscan female saints of that time, first of all the physical following of Christ’s poverty and deprival. St. Agnes as well as St. Clara is tended to the highest pattern of Virgin Mary. There is no distinctive difference between St. Agnes and other female saints in the legends, because they all are subject to the similar origin. St. Agnes belongs to the female saints of 13th century because of hagiographer’s effort and a conformity with other female saints, particularly St. Clara, but the historical facts illustrate quite different view, especially the question of Franciscan poverty and St. Agnes’ status of noblewoman.
