Some Ethical Themes in Work of Jane Austen from the Perspective of Aristotle’s Theory of Virtue

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce „O některých etických motivech v díle Jane Austenové z hlediska Aristotelovy teorie ctností“ se zabývá povahokresbou, iluzí osobnosti, rozdělením literárních postav mezi karikatury a osobnosti. Do těchto kategorií zařazuje a popisuje postavy novely Pýcha a předsudek. Dále probírá motiv manželství, který prostupuje dílem Jane Austenové, s příklady analyzované knihy. Obě tyto části jsou nahlíženy převážně z aristotelského hlediska. Posledním cílem práce je ukázat vývoj kategorií ctností se zakotvením u výčtu ctností Jane Austenové ve srovnání s Williamem Cobbettem. Důležitou součástí této práce je pokus o aplikaci teorie morálních ctností podle Aristotela, s přihlédnutím ke křesťanskému vyznání Jane Austenové.

Abstract:

The bachelor diploma thesis is called „Some Ethical Themes in Work of Jane Austen from the Perspective of Aristotle’s Theory of Virtue“ and deals with characterization, illusion of personality, and division of literary characters into caricatures and individualities. The thesis describes the characters of a novel Pride and Prejudice and categorizes them as mentioned above. Furthermore, it discusses the theme of marriage, which is omnipresent in the work of Jane Austen, using the examples from the analyzed piece. Both issues are viewed in terms of Aristotle‘ s teaching. The last aim of the thesis is to show the development of categories of virtues embedded in the enumeration of virtues in Jane Austen's work in comparison with the work of a contemporary like William Cobbett. The important part of this thesis is attempt to apply the list of Aristotelian moral virtues of character of Pride and Prejudice. There is a duty of Christian look to moral virtues because of Jane Austen’s confession.
