Terror as an accompanying phenomenon of totalitarianism

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce je teror jako průvodní jev totalitarismu. Teoretická část této práce nabízí především popis samotného fenoménu totalitarismu, jeho vzniku, obecně přijímaných charakteristik a sporu, zda je to jev prapůvodní či moderní. Nejrozsáhlejší část práce je věnována kapitole, kde je rozpracována role teroru v totalitarismu dle jednotlivých analytiků totalitarismu. Závěr teoretické části popisuje proměny totalitní společnosti pod vlivem teroru a dopad teroru na společnost v Československu v 50. letech 20. století masové nezákonnosti, perzekuce a politické procesy spolu s mechanismem jejich přípravy. Praktická část práce se věnuje studii konkrétního politického procesu Františka Zajíčka jako obyvatele Ústeckého kraje, který byl popraven v rámci politických procesů v 50. letech 20. století. Tento proces byl pro diplomovou práci vybrán především proto, že svým pojetím překročil regionální rámec.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with terror as an epiphenomenon of totalitarianism. The theoretical section of this thesis primarily describes the phenomenon of totalitarianism itself and its origins. It also examines the generally accepted characteristics of a dispute, by considering if this phenomenon is primordial in origin, or in fact more modern. The biggest section is devoted to examining the importance of terror in successfully employing totalitarianism as a form of governance by individual analysing different regimes. The conclusion of the theoretical section uses Czechoslovakia in the 50s as a case study for the imposition of totalitarianism on a society, and the role of terror in that process. The impacts of lawlessness, persecution and political processes are all considered as part of the mechanism for the imposition. The practical part of this thesis is devoted to the study of a resident of the Ústí region, František Zajíček, whose execution has come to typify the theory that terror played a central role in the imposition of totalitarianism on Czechoslovakia under the communist regime. This concept was chosen for this dissertation because its examination of the concept crosses the regional framework.
